[Obituary for Arthur L. Trullender, from the Muncie Star Press, 24 Nov 1960, p18.]

BLUFFTON, Ind. - Arthur Leroy Trullender, 63, father of Robert Trullender and Mrs. Herbert Brown, both of Muncie, died at 4:15p.m. Wednesday at the Wells County Hospital following a four-day illness. Mr. Trullender, who had spent most of his life in Wells County, was an employe [sic] of the Estey Piano Co., Bluffton.

Survivors, besides the son and daughter, include another son, William E., New Orleans, Ia. [sic]; two brothers, Wilford, Bluffton, and Alfred, Chicago, and two sisters, Mrs. Herman Shane, Bluffton, and Mrs. Carl Schutt, Sherman, Tex. One daughter is deceased.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10a.m. Saturday at the Thoma Funeral Home with the Rev. Keith Davis officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7p.m. Thursday.

 

Narrative

Note: Researching Arthur Leroy Trullender and family

Arthur and his family have proven somewhat difficult to research, due in part to divorces and other family splits across multiple generations, some gaps in the records that are readily available and indexed, and a great deal of relocation in subsequent generations (some due to military service).

Arthur married to Flossie Alice Jackson in Wells Cty, Indiana in early summer of 1918, and the family seems to have moved around within the county over the next few decades, presumably as Arthur followed available blue-collar work (including working in a piano factory and later as an auto mechanic). By 1940, Arthur and Flossie appear to have separated, and were living in different neighborhoods in Muncie, Delaware Cty, Indiana, with their children split between them or married and living elsewhere:

- Velma, their oldest, was living with Flossie with Velma's two-year-old son Donald Courtney Jr.
- Robert, second-born and oldest son, was living with Arthur.
- Martha had married in 1939 and was likely living with her husband (James Waldo Young).
- William, their youngest child, was living with Flossie.

Arthur and Flossie were divorced in 1941, and it appears that Arthur did not remarry; Flossie remarried twice, and was widowed from each of those subsequent husbands. Of their children:

- Velma Helen died in 1956, preceding her father in death by four years, and appears to have had only one son (Donald Beverly Courtney Jr.).

- Robert Earl Sr. married in 1941, enlisted in the Army in 1942 and served in the European Theatre, and had two sons prior to his wife's death in 1972 and his own in 1987 (four days before his sixty-seventh birthday).

- Martha Rose appears to have married at least three times, with her third marriage lasting thirty-seven years, ending in her husband's death; she appears to have had two daughters, though this is unconfirmed.

- William served in the military, and appears to have remained enlisted for his career; his wife appears to have been enlisted, as well, and the two of them appear to have had a single daughter.

Arthur's obituary does not mention any grandchildren, though Flossie's obituary (from 1997, thirty-seven years later and two marriages later) mentions six grandchildren. This appears to match with the count I have indicated just above. Tracking subsequent generations, however, has been difficult; more recent records are not as readily available, and at least some of Arthur's grandchildren moved around a great deal and married and divorced multiple times.

Of particular interest is that Flossie's obituary mentions one third-great-grandson born prior to her death in 1997. I have not yet confirmed that child's identity, nor even which of her grandchildren's lineage would have produced this child. It is possible that this desgination was in error, or was a descendant of one of her other husbands' lines, but it is also possible that this was a legitimate claim - at the time of her death, Flossie's oldest confirmed grandchild (Donald Courtney Jr.) was nearly sixty years old, and may well have been a grandfather or even a great-grandfather himself at that point.
