Narrative

Note: The children of Addie Urbine and Charles Samuel Bates

Some time after their marriage in Fort Wayne, Allen Cty, Indiana in early 1892, Addie and Charles moved just across the state line to Van Wert Cty, Ohio, near the village of Convoy, where their first two children (Willard and Chloa) were born. By the time of the birth of their third child (Franklin Dewey), both Willard and Chloa had died - Willard as a toddler, and Chloa as an infant - and by 1900 the family had moved to New Haven, Allen Cty, Indiana, where the next two children (Thelma and Elsie) were born. By 1905, the family had moved again, this time to Brady Twp, Saginaw Cty, Michigan, where their youngest child (Earl J.) was born.

For reasons unknown at this time, Willard and Chloa were listed with the family in the 1900 US Census, with their ages given as seven and six, respectively. Initially I had believed this indicated that both children were alive at that time, and by the time of the 1910 US Census (when they were no longer listed with the family) they were either living elsewhere as teenagers, or had died as children or adolescents. Instead, I found burial listings with photos for the two of them on the FindaGrave.com website in the Monroeville Memorial Cemetery in Monroeville, Allen Cty, Indiana; the headstones match and both name them the children of "C.S. and A.J. Bates." The dates of death engraved on the headstones indicate that Chloa died in late 1895, while Willard died in 1896. Additionally, the listing for Chloa also includes a death notice from the Monroeville Weekly Breeze dated 10 Oct 1895, stating that the "infant babe of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bates" had died the previous Saturday. This suggested to me that the two children had indeed died prior to the family leaving Ohio for Indiana, and that the inclusion of the two deceased children on the 1900 US Census was in error - though whether this error was intentional or due to some misunderstanding is unclear at this time.

Elsie married at the age of twenty-three to a young man named Herman Dingler, who had come to America as a child with his parents, likely from Prussia or Germany. Elsie died less than eighteen months later with no surviving children.

Of their surviving three children, Franklin Dewey had eleven children, while Thelma had two and Earl J. appears to have had at least three.
