Narrative

Note: Elsie M. Bates and her husband Herman Dingler

After moving to Michigan with her family while still a toddler, Elsie married at the age of twenty-three to Herman Dingler on New Year's Eve, 31 Dec 1925. Elsie died less than eighteen months later, well before her twenty-fifth birthday. Whether Herman returned to his parents' household before or after Elsie's death is unknown, but he was counted with them in the 1930 US Census, along with his younger siblings (one of whom, coincidentally, was his nineteen-year-old Michigan-born sister, Elsie). No young children were present, suggesting that Herman and Elsie either had no surviving children prior to her death. By 1940, Herman had remarried and had a daughter with his second wife, Alma.

Interestingly, Herman's birthplace is given as Germany in most census records and his marriage record to Elsie, but on the 1910 US Census record he (and his father) note their birthplaces as Poland (while his mother gives hers as Germany). On his WWI Draft Registration card, Herman indicated he was a native-born citizen, which I suspect was a deliberate attempt on his part to obscure his place of birth due to the war. Additionally, given that in one record his family differentiates between his parents' birthplaces, I would suggest that he (and his father) may well have been Prussian, not German.
