Narrative

Note: The potential spouses and children of Earl J. Bates

Due to some gaps in the records I have been able to find thus far, I have not confirmed as much of Earl's adult life as I would like. After being counted as a teenager in his parents' household in the 1920 US Census, the next record I have found for him is his own household's listing in the 1940 US Census. Here, he is counted as a thirty-four-year-old with a much-younger Michigan-born wife Thelma (with her age given as nineteen) and three children (Charles J., William, and Dixie Dee Bates), all three years of age or younger. I have not found a marriage record for Earl and Thelma, nor have I found her vital dates or maiden name. Additionally, I don't know whether their marriage ended in divorce or in Thelma's death.

After the 1940 Census, the next record I have found for Earl is his Michigan death record from September 1982, which lists his spouse as "Tonia Kauppinen" on the index record. This woman died barely three months after Earl, and is buried beside him as Toini Bates, according to the engraving on the headstone. Her birthdate from the stone (13 Oct 1907) matches a Michigan birth record for Toini Bertha Sylvia Kauppi, born to Finnish immigrants Matti Kauppi and Anna Karppinen. I have not found a marriage record or date for the two of them, nor do I have any information as to whether Earl and Toini may have had children.

I have not found further confirmed records for Earl's three children from the 1940 US Census record, nor do I know if he had further children from any marriage.
