Narrative

Note: Researching Sarah Catherine DeWitt

There were several women named Sarah DeWitt of a similar age living in the eastern counties of Indiana in the mid-19th century - at least one of whom shared the same middle initial with Sarah, daughter of Lorenzo and Hannah (Ogle) DeWitt. At least one of those was also her first cousin - Sarah (DeWitt) Smith, daughter of Hannah's sister Malinda (Ogle) DeWitt (herself the first wife of Clark Edward DeWitt Sr.) and wife of Joseph A. Smith.

Confirming which of these women was actually the daughter of Lorenzo and Hannah was a minor challenge; many of the online pedigrees and family trees name Hannah and Lorenzo's daughter Sarah as Sarah Catherine (DeWitt) Swain, wife of Stephen Swain and mother of five children. The marriage records I have found for Sarah and Stephen do not name her parents, and the obituary for Sarah Swain (from the Huntington Herald-Press, 31 May 1927, and posted online to the FindaGrave.com website) gives her birthplace as Wells Cty, Indiana and names her parents "Alonzo and Rebecca DeWitt." I will note that I have note found record of any Alonza DeWitt in the immediate area around Wells Cty from the time period of Sarah's birth, so this may well be simply a mistaken second- or third-hand recollection of her parents' names by the obituary writer (as Hannah had died nearly thirty years prior, and Lorenzo had died more than sixty year earlier).

The closest thing I have found to confirmation of this Sarah's inclusion among Lorenzo and Hannah's children is the obituary for her older sister, Nancy Jane (DeWitt), which names two surviving sisters - one of them "Mrs. Frank Swaim, of Huntington." I have proceeded with the assumption that this connection is correct.

I will also note that Sarah's obituary gives her date of birth as 15 Sep 1858, though I believe this to be incorrect by one year. In the 1860 US Census listing for her parents' household (taken on 29 Jun 1860), Sarah's age was given as eight months, putting her birthdate in September of 1859.
