Notes: Researching Canaan DeWitt and family

The earliest record I have found for Canaan is the 1850 US Census record for his parents' household, in which he was listed as eleven months old. As the record was dated mid-November, this would seem to suggest that he was born in January of 1850.

Canaan was included again in the 1860 US Census with his parents and siblings, and again in 1870 with his widowed mother and his siblings. After this, the only record I have found for him is a marriage record from Huntington Cty, Indiana in January 1876 to Eliza Barns; I feel confident this record applies to our Canaan DeWitt, because of both the proximity to his last known residence (Union Twp, Huntington Cty) and the relative uniqueness of his name.

I have not found further details for Eliza, including any birthdate, birthplace, or the names of her parents. I have also not found any information on the couple or any potential children they may have had. I suspect they may have moved to a frontier region, as many of Canaan's relatives had done in the late 19th century, and perhaps their untimely deaths in such an area may have escaped any lasting record.
