Narrative

Note: Henry Cowger

The text George and Hannah Hawes of Pendleton County Virginia / West Virginia (pp34-37) devotes four pages to recounting the documented history of Henry Cowger, with a large portion of the review covering the various land transactions, property sales and transfers, and court records in which Henry appears. These all indicate that Henry (alongside, and sometimes in partnership with, his brother John) grew his holdings somewhat significantly over the course of his life, though the only point at which his occupation was reported was the 1850 US Census, which noted him a farmer. It also appears that he was quite involved in business and financial dealings with his neighbors (many of whom were relations of his by blood or marriage). It also is recorded that, by the time he was in his thirties, he was also a slaveowner.

After the death of his father when he was just a boy, Henry petitioned the court to have James Dyer, a relative on his mother's side, appointed as his guardian and to give surety. Like his father, it appears he paid for a substitute for his military service (Jacob Faust or similar), and likely for similar reasons - he was married with a young and growing family to support.

Henry's cause of death is not recorded anywhere that has been found, though it is noted that his wife Elizabeth died of "dropsy" in 1858. Of their ten children, all were born on the original Cowger land, and two of their sons remained there after they were grown and married.
