Narrative

[Obituary for Clarence R. Lantis, from the Huntington Herald-Press, 4 Jan 1987; posted online to the FindaGrave.com website.]

Clarence R "Scoop" Lantis died Saturday when his car struck a tree along Ind 5 just north of Warren.
The Death marked Huntington County's first traffic fatality of 1987.

Lantis, 82, died at the scene of massive chest injuries, Deputy Jay Beghtel said. He was alone in the car at the time of the accident, which occurred only about a half-mile from his home.

Beghtel said Lantis was southbound on Ind-5 when his right tires went off the west side of the road. He apparently over corrected in steering the car back onto the road and ended up on the east side of the road. In trying to avoid an oncoming car, Lantis' car went into a yard and struck a tree. The accident happened at 11:07 am Saturday on Ind-5 about a half-mile north of CR 900S.

Mr Lantis was born Sept 19, 1904 to Oscar and Dora Smith Lantis. His marriage was Feb 18, 1928, in Bluffton to the former Mildred Almeda Baker, who survives.

He was a lifelong resident of Huntington county, and attended the United Church of Christ in Warren. Mr Lantis was self-employed in the floor covering and upholstery business prior to his retirement.

Also surviving are a daughter, Joan Thompson, Warren; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services held at the H Brown and Son Funeral Home, Warren, with Rev Richard Warner officiating. Pallbearers were Gary Thompson, Lester Penrod, Bud Bowman, Eugene Norris Steve Jones and Don Pearson. Burial is in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Warren.
