Narrative

Note: Researching Emmett Valentine Rhoads

There are a few definite points of potential confusion in the records for Emmett Valentine Rhoads, mostly stemming from the time period after the death of his first wife, Serena Kite, in 1886. The listing for him on the FindaGrave.com website, in the supplemental information, has reference to his conviction and sentencing for embezzlement and theft, along with his release from prison, all in the early 1890s. I've not substantiated any of these events thus far, though the supplemental information does refer to specific dates of the Urbana Daily Citizen newspaper for these incidences.

After that, there appears to be a marriage record for Emmet V. Rhoads to M. Ella Smith in 1894 in Logan Cty, Ohio - and this is where things get potentially messy. The following records are then found:

(a) 1900 US Census - Theodore Rhoads (b. Oct 1847 in Vermont), wife Maud Ella Rhoads, son Fred E Rhoads and boarder John Kinsell in Montgomery Twp, Columbus (city), Franklin Cty, Ohio.

(b) 1910 US Census - Emmitt V Rhoads (b. 1848 in Pennsylvania) with wife Emily Rhoads in Columbus, Franklin Cty, Ohio.

(c) 1910 US Census - Emmett V Rhoads (b. 1847 in Ohio) with wife Ella Rhoads in Mad River, Champaign Cty, Ohio.

(d) 1920 US Census - Emmett V Rhoads (b. 1848 in Pennsylvania) with wife Ella M Rhoads (and two nephews, named Emmett Smith and Emmitt Smith) in Columbus, Franklin Cty, Ohio.

(e) Ohio Death Record, 24 May 1921 for Emmett Valentine Rhoads in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio, naming his parents (Thomas Rhoads and Lydia Valentine) and giving his wife's name as Emella Rhoads.

(f) Ohio Death Record, 15 Jun 1928, for Ella M Rhoads, widow, in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio, naming her parents (father John Kinsall) and giving her husband's name as Theodore Rhoads.

I have found a burial listing on the FindaGrave.com website for Ella Maude (Kinsell) Rhoads, b. 1850, d. 1928 in Green Lawn Cemetery in Columbus, Franklin Cty, Ohio; Theodore Rhoads is listed on the website as buried in the same cemetery (b. 1847, d. 1916) along with Frederick E. Rhoads (b. 1875, d. 1906). The photos of their stones show a matching style, suggesting that this family is probably the one referred to in items (a) and (f) above.

I believe the family for the marriage record to M. Ella Smith applies to item (d), the census record that includes two nephews with the surname Smith. I also am very certain that the death record, item (e), applies to the Emmett Valentine Rhoads in our family tree. At question, then, is whether the marriage record from 1894 applies to our Emmett Valentine, and to which family each of the 1910 US census listings, items (b) and (c), should apply. I also have no information on the birth, death, and burial of the M. Ella (Smith) Rhoads to which the 1894 marriage record applies.

(I should also note that there are many records in the index searches that come up in Ohio for a Valentine Rhoads of about the same age as our Emmett Valentine Rhoads, though this appears to be a separate man entirely.)

The only listed Rhoads interments in Evergreen Cemetery in St. Paris, Champaign Cty, Ohio on the FindaGrave.com website are for Emmett Valentine and his first wife, Serena. At this point, I don't have confirmation that our Emmett remarried. Finding obituaries may help sort this out.

ADDENDUM: There is an entry in the History of Champaign County, Ohio (published by W.H Beers & Co., Chicago, 1881) giving a biography of Emmet V. Rhoads that gives his birthdate and place in agreement with the information I have so far. It also gives his wife as Serena Kite, with her birthdate and place, their marriage date, and the names of their three children. The article, in addition to detailing his education and social pursuits, also discusses his work in various finance and treasury positions for different organizations, and paints him in a very favorable light. Given that all of the negative occurrences from above (Serena's death, Emmett's conviction for embezzlement) had yet to come about at the time of the text's publication, everything seems to indicate that this article does apply to the Emmett in our tree.

Unfortunately, that's where the benefit of the article ends, as there is no mention of the names of his parents or his siblings.
