Narrative

A public Ancestry.com tree (owner "Irene Greer Ihrig") gives his parents' names as Joseph and Margaret Rhodes. No other information is given. This does seem quite possible, as he named two of his children Joseph and Margaret.

So far as his name, in the census records it is nearly always given as simply "Thomas," with the exception of the 1870 US Census, where he is listed as "Henry." (I am confident this is still the correct household, as all the other family members line up correctly.) The only source I have for his middle name being "Charles" is the obituary for his daughter (Iola Catherine Stonebraker), which names the parents Mr. and Mrs. Charles Rhoads of Logan Cty, Ohio; his listing on FindaGrave.com calls him only "Thomas," and does not include a photo of the gravestone for reference. For now, I have removed any middle name until I can find further confirmation.

ADDENDUM: Returning to this branch of research after a few years, I have found a public tree on the FamilySearch.org website that names his parents as Jacob Rhodes (b. 1796, d. 1884) and Mary Goodner (b. 1800, d. 1824). This was a second marriage for Jacob, as his first wife, Mary Fox (whom he married in 1819 in Warren Cty, Ohio) seems to have died in childbirth with their son John Rhoads (b. 1820). His second wife seems to have died sometime in the 1820s, as Jacob remarried in 1832 (again in Warren Cty, Ohio) to the younger Amanda Robinson. The two of them were counted in the 1860 and 1880 US Censuses in Wabash Twp, Fountain Cty, Indiana, and Jacob died in nearby Covington, Fountain Cty, Indiana in 1884. (I will note that "Jacob Rhoades" was counted in the 1840 US Census in Washington Twp, Fountain Cty, suggesting that he was not long in Ohio after his third wedding.)

That same public tree lists Jacob's parents as Samuel Rhoads (b. 1775, d. 1814) and Elizabeth Magdalena Ziegler (b. 1776, d. 1813). Samuel is listed as a son of John Rhoads (b. 1747, d. 1816) and a grandson of Henry Rhoads Sr. (b. 1711, d. 1774), born in southwestern Germany. The tree goes back further generations through Germany (with the surname Rhodt), and before that into France (with the surname de Rodez) as far back as the early 16th century. To verify this line of ancestry will likely require a great deal of research to verify and confirm.

Narrative

Note: The children and grandchildren of Thomas Rhoads and Lydia Ann Valentine

While I cannot confirm that my research is complete at this point, it would appear that Thomas and Lydia had nine children. At least two of their children (Sarah and Joseph) appear to have never married, while I cannot account for Emma past the age of about fifteen (after her appearance in the 1880 US Census listing for her parents' household). Margaret appears not to have married until she was in her fifties, and Laura Mary married a widower more than twenty years her senior, with no evidence found yet in my searches to indicate that she had children prior to his death (in 1911, when she herself had reached her mid-fifties).

Of those four that did have families, most of the progeny was born to Ida, their youngest child - she alone accounts for ten of their seventeen known grandchildren, and eighteen of their thirty-eight known great-grandchildren. Of the rest:

- Oldest son Emmet had three children, and has at least two known grandchildren.

- Kate (Iola Catherine), my second-great-grandmother, had three sons (out of five born) that lived to adulthood, and fourteen grandchildren (including my grandmother).

- Hattie (Harriet) had only one known daughter, and four grandchildren.

There may well be more grandchildren and great-grandchildren for Thomas and Lydia, as the research I have done is not entirely complete, but I believe I have accounted for most of them, if not all of them.
