Narrative
Note: Researching Lydia Ann Valentine
In the 1850 US Census listing for the household of Thomas Rhoads and Lydia (Valentine) Rhoads is a twenty-one-year-old bachelor named Jesse K. Valentine. Each of the men give their occupation as "miller," suggesting that perhaps they were in business together. Supplemental information posted to the FindaGrave.com website's listing for Jesse gives his parents' names as William Valentine and Hannah Keith; that information also indicates that he had four older brothers, but doesn't mention any older sisters, and says he was one of ten children. (One of his older brothers, Archibald, was easier to locate than the others - and the supplemental information on Archibald's listing on the FindaGrave.com website gives the same parents' names, but says he was one of six children.) Further searches turns up a listing for William Henry Valentine, son of Barnabas and Jane Valentine, husband of Hannah Keith, and father of ten (including most of the same names listed with Jesse's supplemental), b. 1797 in Pennsylvania, d. 1848 in Champaign Cty, Ohio.
I had initially hoped that Lydia and Jesse were siblings, which would make establishing a lineage for her easier. While that is still possible (girls were obviously much more easily "lost" to history upon marriage and giving up their maiden names), they may have been cousins, not siblings. Locating a copy of her obituary, if any exists, might well give her parents' names to help confirm or contradict this line of research.
ADDENDUM: A pedigree for descendants of Barnabas Valentine, posted to the worldfamilies.net website, lists ten children born to him and wife Hannah Jane, five of them sons (including William Henry). Of those sons, John (b. 1793) and Robert (b. 1800) would both easily be old enough to be the father of Lydia, and among the two youngest sons, even James (b. 1806) might have been her father, though that's not nearly as likely.
The confluence of Lydia and Jesse in the same household would strongly suggest to me that Lydia was also a grandchild of Barnabas Valentine, though I have not managed to find much documentation of the families of Barnabas' other sons to be able to confirm this.
SECOND ADDENDUM: Returning to this branch of research after a few years, I decided to start looking for potential parents and grandparents of Lydia in Chester Cty records. I will note that her second son had a relatively uncommon middle name of Absalom, and there was a an Absalom Valentine (or Balentine, or similar) counted in the 1820, 1840, and 1850 US Censuses in Londonderry Twp, Chester Cty, Pennsylvania. This man was born about 1795, and in the 1840 listing for his household there was indeed one young woman between the ages of fifteen and twenty - which could well have been Lydia. This Absalom Valentine had an older sister Lydia, and was himself one of the younger sons of another Absalom Valentine (b. 1757). I find it this to be a more likely candidate ancestry for our Lydia than Barnabas. Online records have not lead to much that can confirm this, so actual local records may be required to confirm this.
