Narrative

[Obituary for Frank Forst, paper and date unknown but likely a Bluffton publication; clipping from the files of Jane Anne Thomas.]

[headline] Frank Forst Died Sunday in Florida
[second line] Former prominent citizen of Bluffton died suddenly.

The receipts of news in the city Sunday evening, announcing the death of B.F. Forst, a former Bluffton citizen at St. Petersburg, Florida, was a shock and surprise to many friends and acquaintances. The word came in a telegram to Frank Staver, a brother-in-law and stated that he had passed away suddenly at 1:30 Sunday morning. While he had been in poor health for several years from heart trouble, his early death was not surmised by those who knew him best. He and his wife had come here from their home in Linton to attend the street fair and visit with relatives. They only returned home in the middle of last month and less than two weeks ago left for St. Petersburg, Florida, to spend the winter, thinking that his health might be improved.

Mr. Forst was the son of Mr. And Mrs. George Forst and was born in 1856. For many years he lived with his parents on a farm in Union township, this county. Early in life he learned the baker's trade and went to Huntington where he followed that occupation. He was employed in a grocery and bakery there for several years and then came to Bluffton over forty years ago. For a time he and the late Robinson Hatfield owned the Star Bakery and held a fine trade. Later the business was disposed of and he and his brother, Emory, entered the grocery business, buying out the C.M Miller grocery located in the room west of the Morris store. This stock was finally moved to the room east of the Studabaker Bank occupied by the Central Grocery. The two brothers continued in a successful business until six or seven years ago when Emory became a traveling salesman, for a grocery house. Frank later purchased a 5 and 10c store at Linton, this state, and has continued a resident there ever since. His brother, A.M. Forst, owns a half interest.

Mr. Forst was united in marriage to Miss Maggie, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Woodward, of Union township and for more than thirty years has lived a happy married life. His wife is a twin sister of Mrs. J.V. Goshorn, of Ossian, a sister of Mrs. Frank Staver and Emery Woodward, of this city. No children were born to this union.

The deceased was best known as Frank, and had a host of friends who will mourn his departure. He was of a cheery disposition and always gained friends during his business career in Bluffton. In early life he was a member of the K. of P. lodge, of this city, but had let his membership drop. When living in Bluffton he was a member of the Presbyterian church, but after going to Linton he transferred his membership to the M.E. church.

He leaves but one brother, A.M. Forst, who was in business with him at Linton. The other near relatives are all dead. His brother, Emory, died after going to Sullivan, Indiana, to engage in the 5 and 10 cent store business.

The funeral cortege will leave St. Petersburg Tuesday forenoon and arrive in Bluffton sometime Thursday afternoon. The remains will be taken to the home of his brother-in-law, Frank Staver and wife, on East Central Avenue. The funeral will be at 2:30 Friday afternoon, Rev. Tuesdale, of the Presbyterian church, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. It has not been decided as yet whether the services will be at the Staver home or the Presbyterian church.
