Narrative

I do not currently have information on whether Sophia and husband Jefferson had any children, but I think it unlikely; the 1870 US Census listing for their household was taken on 18 Jul 1870, and other than the married couple, the only other member of their household is Jefferson's thirteen-year-old brother, Jacob. Sophia's death came just eighteen months later, in late January 1872. Jane Anne Thomas, in the biographical article she'd written on Sophia's grandfather David Forst in the Huntington County, Indiana History & Families 1834-1993 text, noted that Sophia died in childbirth with their first child.

Jefferson appears to have married twice more - once to Catherine Engleman in Oct 1872 in Huntington Cty, Indiana, and then again in Jul 1881 to Mary Moore in Fulton Cty, Indiana. In between he appears in the 1880 US Census in Henry, Fulton Cty, Indiana as a widowed boarder in the Runkle household. No other family member named Kitt appears there with him.

I have found very little in the "Forst family" files of Jane Anne Thomas for Sophia and Jefferson, beyond a small composite photograph of the two of them, and the original photo of Sophia used to make the composite, both annotated on the back by Mary Alice (Bayha) Thomas. On the composite she has written:

"Sophia and Jeff Kitt, in Huntington Co. Sophia Forst Kitt, sister of Mother's mother."

Further searches for Jefferson Kitt turn up only a 1910 US Census listing in Oklahoma, which may or may not be the same man, but shows him with yet another wife (Julia). I do not have confirmation of his birthdate or place, nor do I know his date of death or burial location.
