Narrative

Note: the children and step-children of Lena Boyington and Joseph Harvey Comer Sr.

Both Lena and Joseph had been married prior to their wedding in 1913, with each of their first marriages ending in the death of their spouse. Joseph had been married first to Minnie Hickerson before 1907; the two of them are counted with their two oldest children, Christine (age three) and Joseph Jr. (age one), in Black Dog Twp, Osage Cty, Oklahoma in the 1910 US Census. As it happened, Joseph and Minnie were pregnant with their third child, daughter Orenia, at the time of that census count, but less than two weeks after Orenia's birth in mid-August, Minnie died, presumably of complications from childbirth.

Lena had also been previously married - in the 1910 US Census, she was listed in her parents' household in Jordan Valley Twp, Pawnee Cty, Oklahoma as a nineteen-year-old widow with the surname "Coats" (as spelled on the form) alongside her eleven-month-old daughter Madeline Coates. I have not found marriage record for her and her first husband, nor have I found his name or vital dates. I suspect it may well have been Jacob Coates (b. 8 May 1889, d. 29 Jun 1909), as his burial is listed as Dixie and Bear Creek Cemeteries in Cleveland, Pawnee Cty, Oklahoma, but I have no confirmation of this supposition at this time.

How long Joseph lived as a widower with young children is unknown, though I suspect he had some assistance from his family for a year or so. After he and Lena married in the spring of 1913, the next record I have found for them is the 1920 US Census listing for their household. In addition to Lena's younger sister Gladys Boyington, their family included Joseph's oldest two children, Christine (age thirteen) and Joseph Jr. (age eleven), Lena's daughter Madeline (age ten, and listed with the Comer surname), and the first child born to their marriage, Bernice (age three).

It is unknown if Orenia ever lived with her father after he had remarried, but by that same 1920 US Census she was living with her father's much older sister, the widow Jeannette "Nettie" (Comer) Thornburgh, in Kansas. Nettie was widowed sometime after 1910 (when she was counted in the federal census that year with her husband R.S. Thornburgh, eleven years her senior), and it appears she had no children of her own. Orenia lived with Nettie at least through the 1940 US Census, after Orenia herself had married (to Harry LeRoy Clinesmith), and likely through Nettie's death in 1945. I am uncertain, as well, whether Orenia had any contact with her father, her siblings, or her half-siblings at later points in her life.

Madeline may well have been adopted by Joseph, as she continued to bear the Comer surname, at least as suggested by her appearance in the 1930 US Census, listed as a boarder in household of the widow Lula Lipe in Nowata, Nowata Cty, Oklahoma. I have not found further confirmed record for her after that point.

In addition to the four children from their previous marriages, Lena and Joseph had four surviving children during their marriage. The obituary for their youngest daughter, Ann (Comer) Thompson in 2012, mentions that Ann was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters, and survived by one sister (Bernice) and one brother (Gene). This suggests at least some degree of contact and relations were present amongst the siblings throughout their lives, but is unconfirmed.
