Narrative
Note: The family of Anne Hoffman
In the text Christian Metzger: Founder of an American Family 1682-1942 (p178), the passage for Anne Hoffman states that she:
"...had five children, who were born there, viz. Mary, Sadie, and Lillie, daughters who
married and had children. Also sons, Charles Taylor and Howard Taylor. The mother,
Fannie Weible Huffman, spent her old age and long widowhood with this daughter, Anne
Taylor, at Dover, Ill."
The last statement - that Anne's mother lived with her in her later years - I have been unable to confirm, as Anne's mother Fannie (Weible) Huffman does not appear with Anne's family in any of the US Census records from 1860 through 1880 (including after a visual inspection of the images of the original forms).
Along another potential line of correction to the Metzger text, Anne appears to have had not just five children, but at least ten and possibly as many as fourteen. The following list is what children of hers I have been able to confirm connection to the family, along with a brief list of the other possible candidates. It is my suspicion that either the author of the text or her sources left out several of the children either through ignorance (as many had died decades before the text was written and published, usually without children) or intentionally (for the same or similar reasons). All but two of the following children are buried in the same cemetery as Anne and her husband John - Prairie Repose Cemetery in Dover - the exceptions are son John, whose death date is unconfirmed and burial location unknown, and Fanny, who is buried in North Prairie Cemetery in rural Bureau Cty.
- Son Lafayette was born in 1856, was counted with the family in the 1860 US Census, and died in 1861. His burial listing on the FindaGrave.com website displays his gravestone photo.
- Son Daniel K. was born in 1857, and was counted with the family in both the 1860 and 1870 US Censuses, prior to his marriage. His burial listing also clearly displays his gravestone photo. He appears to have had at least five children.
- Daughter Fanny was an infant death in late 1859, aged just under five months. She is not conuted in any census record, and her burial listing does not include a photo.
- Daughter Mary was born in late 1860, and so was not counted with the family until the 1870 US Census. Her burial listing on the FindaGrave.com website gives her married surname (Elwood) and does not include a gravestone photo.
- Daughter Lillie Estelle was born in 1862, and was counted with the family in both the 1870 and 1880 US Censuses. Her burial listing includes a photo, and she appears to have been married and widowed multiple times, with at least one son.
- Daughter Sarah Sadie was born in 1866, and like her sister Lillie was counted in both 1870 and 1880. Her burial listing also includes a photo, and she appears to have had only one daughter.
- Son John was born in early 1870, and like Lillie and Sadie he was counted in both 1870 and 1880. His burial location is unknown, and his death date (1900) is unconfirmed. It is unknown whether he married or had children.
- Son Charles C. was born in 1876, and is counted in the 1880 and 1900 US Censuses. He married, and after his mother's death his father, John Barton Taylor, was counted as living with Charles and his wife Rosazella in the 1910 US Census. Charles and his wife do not appear to have had any children. His burial listing includes a photo.
- Son Howard was born in ealy 1879, and like his brother Charles was counted in 1880 and 1900. He married, and appears to have had one son. His burial listing does not include a photo of his gravestone.
- Son Enos was born in 1883, and died in 1891, and as such he is not counted in any existing census record. His burial listing does not include a photo.
The list of Anne and John's children as indicated by entries on the FindaGrave.com website also includes four others with no burial information and no presence in any census listing for the family. Three of them I believe were likely infant deaths, as the listings include only birthdates (Lydia, 1855; Emma, 1864; Martin, 1868). The last one I believe to be an erroneous listing - Grace Taylor, b. 4 Sep 1874, d. 1932. The listing says her burial is unknown, but I would point out that she should have been counted in at least the 1880 US Census listing for her parents' household, and she does not appear in that record.
It is at least somewhat noteworthy that despite the large number of children born to Anne - at least seven of whom having lived to adulthood - she did not have many grandchildren. By my count so far, I can confirm only nine grandchildren.
