Narrative

Note: Researching the children of Daniel K. Taylor

I have not had much success in researching the family of Daniel, in part due to their very common surname. He and his wife had at least five children, but of their five children, I have only managed to find relatively complete information for one (Elsie). Of the other four, the following are the last confirmed records I have found:

- Oldest daughter Mary was born about 1878, and last appears in the 1880 US Census listing for her father's household. Whether she married prior to 1900 or had died young is unknown to me at this time.

- Harry, third-born child and eldest son, was born about 1882 and appears in the 1900 US Census listing for his father's household. There are no shortage of men of that age and name in Illinois at that time (to say nothing of the broader country in general), but I have not yet found specifically which one (if any) of those recorded might be the son of Daniel.

- Fourth-born child Anna, born about 1887, is also last recorded in her father's household in the 1900 US Census; the same can be said for youngest son Louis (or Lewis), born about 1891.

Interestingly, there is a 1920 US Census listing in nearby Fairfield Twp, Bureau Cty, Illinois for Iowa-born Virgil E. Morse, aged thirty-four, with his Illinois-born wife Anna A. Morse, aged thirty-two, and three young sons. Also listed with the family is Illinois-born brother-in-law Lewis D. Taylor, aged twenty-eight. This records stands a fairly good chance of belonging to the youngest two Taylor siblings mentioned above, though I will note that by the time of the 1930 US Census I am not able to find a record of Virgil and Anna together with any of the boys. There do appear to be potential candidates for the boys among the census records in Bureau Cty and nearby Whiteside Cty in 1930. Virgil appears to be living in Whiteside Cty by 1930, this time with a wife named Jennie T., six years younger than Virgil (as opposed to two years younger) and with parents born in England.

I believe the 1920 and 1930 US Census records refer to the same Virgil Morse, as there are WWI and WWII draft cards that give the same birthdate (12 Jul 1885) that seem to line up. The earlier draft card names his wife Mrs. Anna Morse, and was filed in Bureau Cty. The second (which names him more fully as Virgil Eugene Morse) was filed in Whiteside Cty.

Whether this series of records applies to any of the family of Daniel K. Taylor is unknown to me at this time. If it does, it is also unknown to me what happened to Anna (Taylor) Morse between 1920 and 1930, though I would suspect that the marriage ended in her death rather than divorce, or she might well have been recorded living with one of her sons in 1930.
