Narrative

Note: Researching James Ebenezer Bickett and family

I have not had much luck finding complete records for James and his family, as there are some gaps and inconclusive searches in the work I have done so far. Notably, I have not found listings for James and, later, James and family, in the 1900 and 1920 US Census, nor have I found marriage records for his three known daughters.

James married Myrtle Olinger in Horton, Brown Cty, Kansas in 1902, suggesting that he may well have been living on his own in Kansas in 1900 - though it is possible that he was still living near his parents and youngest sibling, all of whom were still living in Dover, Bureau Cty, Illinois in 1900. After his marriage, he and his wife and three daughters were all counted in the 1910 US Census in Pawhuska, Osage Cty, Oklahoma. Of note is that the oldest two girls, Erma and Louise, were both listed as Oklahoma-born, while the youngest (Edna) was given as Kansas-born, suggesting that the family may have moved around between 1900 and 1910.

James' WWI draft registration card, completed on 12 Sep 1918, gave his residence as Muskogee, Muskogee Cty, Oklahoma, and his employer as "Tab Oil Co.," where he was employed in the manufacture of gasoline.

In the 1930 US Census, he and wife Myrtle were couned in Norman, Cleveland Cty, Oklahoma, with only their youngest daughter (Edna, age twenty-one) living with them. By the time of the following federal census a decade later, his household in Langley, Mayes Cty, Oklahoma consisted only of himself, his wife, and his mother Margaret Ann.

As no younger children other than Edna were still living with the family in 1930, it stands to reason that James and Myrtle had only the three daughters, though there may have been other children who were born but did not survive, or who may have left home in their late teens. The last confirmed record for the two older girls which places them in James' family is the 1910 US Census listing, while for youngest daughter Edna the last confirmed record is the 1930 US Census. There are a few possible leads for two of the three girls in later records and searches.

- There is a 1940 US Census listing for an Erma Bickett, age thirty-six, marital status given as single, as a lodger in Norman, Cleveland Cty, Oklahoma; it seems likely that this record applies to James' oldest daughter, as his household was in the same city a decade prior, but this is unconfirmed. I have not yet found further records that may apply to Erma, including any marriage, death, or burial records.

- On the FindaGrave.com web is a listing for Edna (Bickett) Lenderking (b. 12 Oct 1908, d. 23 Mar 1992) in Roselawn Burial Park, Martinsville, (independent), Virginia with husband Howard Lenderking. Searching back from that name, there is a 1940 US Census listing for their household in Bridgeport, Fairfield Cty, Connecticut, where Edna's birthplace is given as Oklahoma. (Also present in the listing is their two-year-old daughter Margaret, possibly named for Edna's paternal grandmother.) This birthdate matches the one given for Edna Bickett in Norman, Cleveland Cty, Oklahoma in a 1928 school enrollment record. While I have not found a marriage record or other confirmed indication of Edna Lenderking's maiden name or parents, I will note that Martinsville is only thirty miles northwest of where father James is buried, with the likely assumption being that, in the years following his wife's death, he may well have gone to live with his youngest daughter and her family in Virginia.
