Narrative

[Excerpt from A Cutler Memorial and Genealogical History, pp83-84.]

67. Joel (5) Cutler (Abner (4), Thomas (3), Thomas (2), James(1)) was born at Rutland, Mass., March 19, 1738. He married Betsey Nichols of Guilford, Vt., his place of residence. She died August 24, 1827, aged eighty-five. In his early manhood, we find his residence recorded as Deerfield, Mass. (Record of Deeds, Worcester County.) About
1799, he removed from Guilford and settled in the adjoining town of Halifax, Vt., where he was engaged in farming and blacksmithing, and where he died, June 5, 1821. Marble slabs mark their resting place in the old cemetery, one and one-half miles north of the village of Halifax, which is in neat and tidy order. Mr. and Mrs. Cutler were active members of the Baptist church. In old age, he gave his property to his son Thaddeus, taking a life lease, and binding him to pay $5 to each of his sons, within six months after his decease, and to make a home for his daughter Eunice as long as she remained single.
