[headline] Gone To Her Final Reward
[second headline] Well Know [sic] Woman of Mapleton Passes to the Great Beyond.
Mrs. Philip Daley passed away at her home in Mapleton Tuesday morning, January 14 1913, aged 68 years and 5 months.
Deceased, whose maiden name was Bridget McLeavy, was born in Perth, Canada, and came with her parents to Mapleton when she was three years old. At the age of eighteen she was married to Philip Daley, who survives her. She also leaves 11 children: Mary, (Mrs. E. Watterson), of Mapleton; James, of Oconomowoc; Nellie, of Chicago; Kathryn and Emma (Mrs. Jas. Sullivan), of Milwaukee; Michael, of North Lake; Julia (Mrs. Dennis Hays), of Hartford; Phil. and Ambrose, of Alderly; John and Elizabeth, at home. She also leaves three sisters and two brothers, Mrs. P. Olwell and Mrs. H McAuley, of Chicago; Mrs Mary Byrnes and John McAleavy, of Ashippun.
Mrs. Daley had many noble traits of character, which endeared her to those around her. She was a good neighbor and a kind and affectionate mother and will be greatly missed by her husband and family, and the community in which she lived. She would have celebrated her golden wedding anniversary the 12th day of February, but her health failed her and she gradually grew worse until death relieved her of her suffering, which she bore with great patience and Christian fortitude.
Funeral services were held Friday morning at 10 o'clock, with burial in St. Catherine's cemetery. The funeral was one of the largest ever held in that vicinity. The Rev. Father Kelly delivered one of the most eloquent sermons ever heard in Mapleton.
The following poem was written by Sister M. Fidelis, a niece of the deceased, in sympathy to the bereaved husband and family:
The School of Sorrow
I sat in the school of sorrow,
The Master was teaching there;
But my eyes were dim with weeping,
And my heart was full of care.
Instead of looking upward,
And seeing His face Divine,
So full of tenderest pity
For weary hearts like mine.
I only thought of the burdens
The cross that before me lay,
So hard and heavy to carry,
That it darkened the light of day.
So, I could not learn my lesson
And say, Thy will be done;
And the Master came not near me,
As the weary hours went on.
At last in my weary sorrow,
I looked from the cross above;
And I saw the Master watching
With a glance of tender love.
He turned to the cross before me,
And I thought I heard Him say:
"My child, thou must bear thy burden,
And learn the task today."
I may not tell the reason
'Tis enough for thee to know
That I, the Master, am teaching,
And give this cup of woe."
So I stooped to that weary sorrow,
One look at that face Divine,
Had given me power to trust Him,
And say, "Thy will, not mine."
And thus I learnt my lesson,
Taught by the Master alone;
He only knows the tears I shed,
But He has wept his own.
And from them come a brightness
Straight from the Home above,
Where the School Life will be ended,
And the cross will show the love.
