Narrative
[Excerpts from the section "Mapleton News" from the Oconomowoc Enterprise, 1 Oct 1919, p2.]
Owen Daley and daughter, Mrs. Farrell, and her son of Sault St. Marie, Michigan, are here, called by the death of Philip Daley.
...
Philip Daley, the last of the Irish pioneers of this vicinity, died at his home Friday morning, after a few days' sickness, death being due to old age. Deceased was ninety years of age. He leaves a family of eleven children and a large number of grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday morning in St. Catherine's church and burial was in St. Catherine's cemetery.
Narrative
[Obituary for Philip Daley, from the Oconomowoc Enterprise, 1 Oct 1915, p8.]
The death of Philip Daley, one of the most respected and well known of Mapleton's pioneer residents, occurred on Friday morning, Sept. 24, 1915, at his home in Mapleton.
Mr. Daley was born Dec. 7, 1823, in County Cavan, Ireland, and came to America in 1856, living in New York state two years and then came to Wisconsin, locating in Mapleton and since had made his home there. His marriage to Miss Bridget McLeavy took place in 1862. Mr. Daley was for a number of years pathmaster in his township and was widely known throughout this vicinity.
He is survived by eleven children: Mrs. Edward Watterson of Mapleton, James and Miss Eleanor Daley of Oconomowoc, Mrs. James Sullivan of Milwaukee, Mrs. Dennis Hays of Hartford, Philip, Ambrose and Miss Katherine Daley of Alderly, Michael of North Lake, John and Miss Elizabeth Daley at the homestead.
Mrs. Daley passed away three years ago.
Funeral services were held Monday morning at St. Catherine's church at Mapleton with burial in St. Catherine's cemetery.
Narrative
Note: Establish Philip Daley's date of birth
Chad Schroeder wrote up a fairly extensive comparison of the various records available to try and determine Philip's actual year of birth; so far, nothing specifically definitive has turned up. He writes:
- 1870 census says he was 40, making his YOB 1829 - 1830.
- 1880 census says he was 50, making his YOB 1829 - 1830.
- 1900 census says he was 66, making his YOB 1833 - 1834.
-> This census actually asked for month and year of birth, and Nov 1833 is filled in.
- 1905 census says he was 72, making his YOB 1832 - 1833.
- 1910 census says he was 76, making his YOB 1833 - 1834.
- Several death notices published after his death in September, 1915, list his age
as 86, making his YOB 1828 - 1829.
- Declaration of intention to immigrate (Waukesha County Circuit Court) says he
was born in 1830.
- Petition for naturalization (Dodge County Circuit Court) says he was 60 when it
was filed in 1891, making his YOB 1830 - 1831.
- His gravestone at Saint Catherine's says he was born in 1827, earlier than any
other document suggests.
- His death certificate says he was born in 1823, 4 years earlier than the date on
his gravestone, and a decade earlier than the average census date. According
to this document, he was 91 years, 9 months and 17 days old at the time of his
death, even though all three obituaries said he was 86. This would mean he
was born December 7, 1823. Again, this conflicts with the 1900 census which
asked the month of birth and he indicated November there.
Shortly after this, I found Philip's obituary from the Oconomowoc Enterprise, which gives the same date of birth as the death certificate, and which would make him nearly ninety-two years old at the time of his death. That obituary also names his birthplace as "County Cavan, Ireland," which may make finding a birth record possible.
