Narrative
[Obituary for Ray W. Baer, posted online to the FindaGrave.com website.]
RAY W. BAER, 66, Naples, Florida, died there suddenly Tuesday morning. Although he had been in failing health for several months, death was unexpected. Born in Dover, Ohio December 10,1898, he had been a Shelby resident on S. Gamble Street Rd. for 50 years. He was a retired mail carrier and had served in that capacity for 30 years as city and rural carrier. He was a member of the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Naples, the O'Brien Post 326 American Legion in Shelby having served in the 28th Keystone Division in World War I. He was active in Union Grange while in Shelby. Suviving are his wife, Abbie; three brothers, Waldo F., of Cardington, Foster of Leipsic and Howard of 11 Windmere Dr.; a sister, Mrs. Katherine (D.M.) Hedrick of Mansfield; and several nieces and nephews.
Narrative
Note: Identifying the spouse of Ray Welty Baer
The first reference I had found for Ray's wife Abbie was her mention in his obituary (posted on the FindaGrave.com website), along with the photo of the headstone he shares with his parents, brother Howard, and sister-in-law Martha. There, in the engraving area next to Ray, is only "Abbie F." with no vital dates. His obituary does not give the place or date of their marriage, nor does it give Abbie's maiden name or any other identifying information.
A quick search of public records for "Abbie Baer" turns up a residence from 1997 in Naples, Collier Cty, Florida, for A.B. Clayton, also known as Abbie A. Baer, b. 10 May 1913. Additionally, there is a US Social Security Death Index record for Abbie A. Baer, b. 10 May 1909, d. 5 Aug 1997, last residence given as Hamilton Cty, Ohio. Further Ohio records searches yields a death record for Abbie A. Baer, b. 10 May 1909 in New Hampshire, d. 5 Aug 1997 in Deer Park, Hamilton Cty, Ohio; this record gives her father's surname as Flint, and her mother's surname as Farnham.
This led to more specific searches for Abbie Flint, which led to a 1930 US Census record in Shelby, Richland Cty, Ohio for a New-Hampshire born Abbie Flint, age twenty, as the employee of the Skiles family, and going further back found the 1920 US Census record for ten-year-old Abbie with widowed mother Rhoda Flint and brother Alburn in Candia, Rockingham Cty, New Hampshire, and further to the 1910 US Census record in Henniker, Merrimack Cty, New Hampshire for the eleven-month-old Abbie with father Henry Flint and mother Rhoda.
Checking into the history for Rhoda and Alburn after that 1920 residence, there is a 1940 US Census record for Rhoda in Candia, and Ohio death records that give her birthplace as Vermont and her date and place of death as 18 Apr 1985 in North College Hill, Hamilton Cty, Ohio; one of these gives her father's surname as Farnham. For Alburn, he appears married with three daughters in the 1940 US Census in Springfield Twp, Hamilton Cty, Ohio, and has an Ohio death record for 10 Nov 1990 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Cty, Ohio.
Abbie's burial location is not currently known to me, as she appears to have survived her mother and brother by several years. I am also uncertain as to whether she ever remarried after Ray's death. One of her adult nieces or some other family member likely saw to the arrangements at her passing, as her husband's obituary mentions no surviving children, so I believe she had no closer surviving family at the time of her death.
