Narrative
Note: Researching Catherine Weible
Excerpted from the text Christian Metzger: Founder of an American Family 1682-1942, p177, under the section for her father William Weible:
He had a daughter, Catharine Weible who was the first wife of Adam Schear.
(See Lydia Jane Weible, dau. of Frederick Weible.) Catharine Weible Schear
was the mother of two sons and four daughters who are lineal descendants of
Christian, Frederick, and Nancy Metzger.
This is the only information given for Catherine in that text, and the only mention made of any of William's children at all that I have found in that same text. I have not yet found confirmed vital dates for her, though she is included in her father's household in the 1850 US Census as a teenager, indicating that her birthdate was about 1834. I also believe she must have died sometime between 1872 (the approximate birthdate of her youngest known child, Matilda) and early 1877, when her widowered husband Adam remarried to Catherine's younger cousin Lydia Jane Weible.
Additionally, the text gives that she was the mother of two sons and four daughters, but it appears there were actually seven children total (two sons and four daughters) born to Catherine and Adam. I suspect the text's author (or her source for this family's information) might have been unaware of Martha, the eldest known child, born about 1858 and for whom I have not been able to find any record after the 1870 US Census (when she was twelve years old). Whether Martha died young or married prior to 1880 is unknown at this time.
In the 1880 US Census, five of Catherine's children can be found counted in Adam's household with his new wife Lydia and their first child, two-year-old Albert. Missing from the household are Catherine's daughters Martha (as noted above) and Anna Rachael, who was living with her mother's first cousin Franklin Eli Weible and his wife and children.
Of the six of Catherine's children that are known to have reached adulthood, all married, though two of those adult daughters are believed to have died without having any children:
- Augustus married Alta Benner, and had seven children and at least eight grandchildren.
- Anna Rachael married Benjamin Wesley Ginther, and appears to have died without children.
- Clara Catherine married Isaiah Fisher, and had four children and at least four grandchildren.
- Alice Mary married Austin Stull, was widowed in her early forties, and appears to have died without children.
- Leroy married Henrietta Crites, and had four children and at least eleven grandchildren.
- Matilda married Charles Baer, and had five children and at least ten grandchildren.
