Narrative

[Obituary for Charles S. Forst, from the South Whitley Tribune, 12 Mar 1942; posted online to the FindaGrave.com website.]

Former Resident Here Dies - Charles S. a son of Samuel & Elizabeth Forst, at one time residents of this place, died at his home in Marion, Indiana, March 4th, at the age of 73 years & 7 months.

His boyhood days were spent around South Whitley and during the Spanish-American War he enlisted with seven others from this place inthe 157th Vol. Inf. at No. Manchester, under Captain Frank Clemmons.

After the war and he received his discharge, he returned to South Whitley where he married Rose Johnson, of Packerton. They resided here about a year and the Mrs. Forst died.

He then moved to Marion, Ind., where he took employment as a guard at the Soldiers home. He remained there for several years and then went to work at a wire factory where he was employed until he was appointed turnkey at the Grant County jail where he served for some time.

In April 1939, he suffered a paralytic stroke which left him nearly helpless. He suffered a second stroke prior to his death.

In October 1919, he married Emma Sherer who survives. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Clara Dennis who is now at the Masonic Home in Sullivan, Illinois, and several nephews besides many friends here.

William W. Glassley, local resident, and a brother-in-law, attended the funeral services with his son, Amos Glassley and wife of Fort Wayne.

A military funeral was conducted by the veterans and sons of foreign wars. Following the graveside rites, the salute was fired and a bugler sounded taps. The large silk flag which draped the casket was presented to the widow. Pallbearers were members of the Moose lodge of which he was a member.

Narrative

Note: Charles Seymour Forst

His marriage record to the widow Emma (Rudicel) Shearer on 20 Oct 1919 indicates that he was married and divorced twice before; his obituary mentions only one prior marriage (to Rose Johnson) just after he returned from service in the Spanish-American War, and states that she had died after a year.

In the 1910 US Census, he is found living in the National Home for Disabled Soldiers in Center Twp, Grant Cty, Indiana, listed as "widowed."

Thus far I've only found two marriage records for Charles - the one mentioned previously for his marriage to Emma, and one on 24 Jan 1894 to Rose Johnson. I've not found a record for any other marriage that I can confirm as his, nor have I found any death or burial record for a Rose Forst that would have been the wife of Charles. I've also not found any divorce records for Charles.

No children are named as survivors in his obituary, indicating he likely had no children. The obituary for Emma also does not name any children (and states that she died at the home of her niece), suggesting she had no children from her first marriage, either.
