Narrative
Note: Louis William Gromeaux's birthdate and residences
Despite having lived nearly his entire life with his parents, I have not been able to establish much detail to the life of Louis William Gromeaux. The earliest record I can find for him is the 1880 US Census for his parents' household, which names him William (with the surname misspelled phonetically as "Gramout") in Jackson Twp, Allen Cty, Indiana; the original census form quite clearly lists his age as three months, with a birth month of March (with a date of 29 Jun 1880 on the form).
Following this was the 1900 US Census listing for his parents' household, listing him as a farm laborer (presumably in the employ of his father) - and on this form, his birthdate is reported as Dec 1881 and his age as eighteen (on a form dated 26 June 1900).
On the 1910 US Census for his parents' household, he is named Louis (surname "Greuneaux"), listed as a laborer (again on his father's farm) with an age of twenty-two (on a form dated 27 April 1910).
Next is his WWI draft registration card (naming him Louie William Gromeaux), dated 12 Sep 1918, giving his birthdate as 25 Dec 1878 and his employment as a farm hand for "Frank Gromeaux" of Monroeville, Allen Cty, Indiana. Just sixteen months later (14 Jan 1920), he is listed again in his parents' household on the 1920 US Census but this time as the farmer (as his father had apparently retired) with his age given as forty.
In the 1930 US Census, Louis is listed as "Roy W." (surname badly spelled as "Goomeanx" on the indexed record, but appears to be spelled correctly on the original form dated 11 Apr 1930), with his age given as fifty and his occupation as "caretaker" on the "farm home." This was the last listing that included both his parents, as his father died the following year.
In the 1940 US Census (form dated 12 Apr 1940), he is listed as sixty-year-old Louis Gromeaux, living with his aged mother and with no occupation given. This would be his last record listing him living with his mother, as she died just five months later.
Two years later, his 1942 WWII draft registration card named him Louis William Gromeaux would give his birthdate as 7 Jan 1880, described him as self-employed, and gave his closest contact as "Jule Voirol," his younger sister of Woodburn, Allen Cty, Indiana. (As Woodburn was listed as his sister's place of residence as well, I suspect he may have been living with her.)
The last possible record I can find for Louis is an Ohio death record from 29 Sep 1962, at the Community Memorial Hospital in Defiance Cty, Ohio, naming him Louis W. Gromeaux and giving his age as eighty with an estimated birth year of 1882. Lining up with this is a listing for Louis Gromeaux in the Catholic Cemetery in Auburn, DeKalb Cty, Indiana, on the FindaGrave.com website, including a photo, with the headstone showing his birth and death years of 1881 and 1962, respectively. His parents and the rest of his siblings appear to have been buried in Allen Cty, Indiana, though I note that his nephew Theodore Voirol (son of Louis' younger sister Julia) was buried there some years later, so perhaps Theodore had care of his uncle Louis in those later years.
All census records from 1900 forward give Louis' marital status as single, and I have not found any indication that he was ever married or had children. I believe the signatures on both of the draft registration cards are rough matches (at least given that the signatures are twenty-four years apart). I am uncertain as to why there is such variability in his reported birthdate, even on records where he himself is likely to have provided the information. My presumption is that he was born sometime over the winter or early spring 1880, in order to have been counted as an infant in the 1880 US Census that June.
