ROBERT J. DURR, 73, of Fort Wayne died Friday in Marion Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The Bluffton native was an electrician for Otis Elevator and veteran of World War II. His wife, Doris, died in 1993. Surviving are a daughter, Roxann Eddington of Jacksonville, Fla.; sons, Terry of Ocala, Fla., and Larry and Jerry, both of Fort Wayne; sisters, Velma Henke and Betty Vanzant, both of Hudson; brothers, Marvin ''Jack'' of Angola, and Garth and Raymond, both of Bluffton; and four grandchildren. Services are 10 a.m. tomorrow in C.M. Sloan & Sons Funeral Home, 1327 Wells St., where calling is 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today. Burial will be with military honors in Covington Memorial Gardens. Preferred memorials are gifts to the American Lung Association.

 

Narrative

Note: the marriages and burial of Robert James Durr

Robert's first marriage was in 1946, to Betty Lu Marie (or Lumarie) Wells (b. 1925, d. 2002), daughter of Merle Edward and Bertha Mae (West) Wells. I believe Robert and Betty divorced, as both of them remarried, but I have not been able to find a confirmed divorce action or date. Betty remarried at some point to Lloyd Franklin Miller (b. 1916, d. 1999), while Robert remarried to Doris Mae Shaffer, daughter of Perry and Ida (Kehrn) Shaffer, in 1950. On his marriage license application with Doris, Robert reported that this was his first marriage; I have not been able to find a marriage record for Betty and Lloyd to see if she reported a date of divorce from Robert.

I believe all of Robert's children (one daughter and three sons) were born from his second marriage, as all four of them are named in both his obituary and that of his wife, Doris.

Robert is buried in Covington Memorial Gardens in Fort Wayne, Allen Cty, Indiana, where at least two of his surviving siblings would later be buried. His wife Doris, though, was buried in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Ossian, Wells Cty, Indiana, where her parents are buried.
