Narrative

Note: William Riley Oldham Jr.

As with his younger sister Nellie, there is some inconsistency in the name given to William in some of the records and historical documents. In the text Christian Metzger: Founder of an American Family 1682-1942, he is named "William Hite Oldham," though in all other records I have found, when his middle name or initial are given, it is "Riley" or "R." I suspect the text is in error, and the records are most likely correct.

I have had some challenge finding residence listings for William in the US Census records so far - likely related to the same difficulty I have had locating listings for his father. In the 1900 US Census, William Jr. is listed with his father and younger sister living with his paternal grandparents and an older uncle. By the time of the 1910 US Census, though, Nellie was counted as living with her maternal grandparents, while both the elder and younger William have not been found in my searches so far continuing through 1930. The younger William did complete WWI and WWII draft registration cards - the first in Santa Clara Cty, California, and the second in San Francisco, San Francisco Cty, California. This suggests that the 1940 US Census record I had found (for William R. Oldham) in San Francisco does indeed apply to the younger William, as well.

One item of note is that in his WWI draft card, William states that he supports his father and uncle, suggesting that his household after 1910 included his father and possibly his father's older brother Charles (counted with them in the 1900 US Census), and that he may have been the only source of income for the household. The 1940 US Census listing also indicates that William was divorced, though I have not found any marriage or divorce records for him at this time.

I have not found any indication that William had any children, so I cannot confirm whether his line has continued or not.
