Narrative

Note: Nellie Grant Hite and family

Nellie was married for less than nine years when her death came at the age of twenty-seven, and followed less than a year after the death of her first son, George, at the age of six. Her husband, William Riley Oldham Sr., was left with two young children (one of them, their daughter Nellie, not yet a year old). William Sr. lived with his parents during his children's youth, but after a handful of years the family split up - the younger Nellie went to live with her maternal grandparents, Madison and Lydia Jane (Huffman) Hite, while William Jr. appears to have started work at a young age to provide for his father and uncle.

William Jr.'s appearances in the records after 1900 are somewhat spotty, though there is some indication that he married and divorced at some point in his adult life. I have not determined whether he had children as of yet.

The younger Nellie's adult life was more thoroughly documented, as she married young (to Orlando Albert Metz) and, after many years without children, adopted a son (George Richard Metz).
