Narrative

[Obituary for William Stuver, paper and date unknown but presumed to be a Huntington publication; clipping from the files of Jane Anne Thomas.]

STUVER
HUNTINGTON, May 10 - William Stuver, 76, proprietor of the Stuver Cement Works which makes burial vaults, died at 10:35 am today in the Huntington County Hospital, where he underwent surgery last Thursday. He had been in failing health since last winter and seriously ill since Feb. 27. Mr. Stuver was in the cement contracting business for four years prior to March, 1910, when the first cement burial vacuum vault patent was granted. In May of that year he started making vaults with the Huntington County copyright privileges. Vaults manufactured in later years were basically the same type. Mr. Stuver engaged in the cement and vault business for 48 years. Survivors are a brother, John Stuver, this city; a sister, Mrs. Anna Poe, this city; a half-sister, Mrs. Effie Bayha, Bluffton; three nieces and two nephews. The body has been returned from the Bailey Mortuary to the residence, where friends may call. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the residence with the Rev. R.B. Meckstroth, Fostoria, O., officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Narrative

Note: Researching William Stuver

"Will" appears in two households in the 1900 US Census; as a boarder in Huntington, and in his father's household.

There is a marriage record from 9 Dec 1940 (when Will was sixty-three years old) to a Bessie A. Tarter (who is buried under that name in Mount Hope Cemetery in Huntington, Indiana, b. 1882, d. 1963); Bessie's maiden name was Weston, and she was the younger sister of Ovilla Weston, who married Will's younger brother John. On that marriage record, Will indicated that this was his first marriage, while Bessie indicated that she had been married once prior, and divorced in 1934. As Will's obituary mentions no wife among the survivors (despite Bessie outliving him), it seems likely that they divorced sometime prior to his death.

Will is buried beside Bertha Sult (b. 25 Oct 1882, d. 12 Dec 1938), sharing a headstone with her; the listing on the FindaGrave.com website reports her as his spouse, though I've found no record indicating as much. Assuming they married after 1930 (when Will was living with his mother and listed on the census record as single), this might explain why Will was listed as widowed in the 1940 US Census, though his marriage record to Bessie (noted above) does not acknowledge such a marriage. Additionally, his obituary mentions no wife preceding him in death, either. I'm uncertain as to Bertha's relationship to the Stuver family at this point.

Jane Anne Thomas, granddaughter of Will's older half-sister, Elfrieda "Effie" (Stuver) Bayha, writes that Will was quite close to his younger brother John, and that he built the house in which his parents lived with him during their later years. Jane Anne notes that Will was very fond of his nephew Lewis (son of his younger sister Anna), and that Will was very much a fan of the "underdog." He was in the habit of giving work (at his vault-making business) to those that needed it, even if there wasn't much call for the work at the time.
