Narrative

Note: The marriages and children of Charles Edwin Weible

I have not yet determined by which name Charles Edwin preferred to be called, as I have found records using each name. On his marriage records, he appears consistently as "Edwin," so perhaps this was his called name.

That I have been able to determine, Charles Edwin married twice - first in 1925, just weeks shy of his twentieth birthday, to Mable Gordon. I do not know how long the two were married, but I have written a fair amount of speculation on Mable's identity and what I believe occurred after her marriage to Charles Edwin - see the notes for his brother, Ralph Weible, for more. In short, I believe the two had a daughter (Dorothy) in 1927, divorced shortly after, and parted ways; I further believe Mable married briefly to Vernon Cullimore, and then sometime after 1930 remarried again, this time to Charles Edwin's older brother, Ralph Weible.

The next record I found for Charles Edwin was the 1940 US Census listing for his household, which included himself, his wife "Francis," two young daughters, and an Iowa-born lodger; this was followed by Charles Edwin's death record from 1952. Further searches turned up his wife's obituary from 2000, showing that she remarried and was widowed again for many years prior to her death. This obituary gave her maiden name as Frances Bakale, Pennsylvania-born daughter of Austrian immigrants George and Rosalyn Bakale. The obituary also named only the two daughters Ruth and Louella, with Ruth having preceded her mother in death, and also named several grandchildren.

Looking further into the records finally turned up a marriage record from Fulton Cty, Ohio in 1931 for Edwin Weible and Frances Skutts, with parents named matching the information I had thus far for the pair.

I still have not found a residence for Charles Edwin in 1930, but interestingly there was a record in the 1930 US Census in Ann Arbor, Washtenaw Cty, Michigan for Pennsylvania-born Francis Skutts as a married twenty-one-year-old woman living on her own as a lodger. This was was likely in quarters reserved for University hospital staff, as her occupation (along with most of those on the page) is given as "ward helper, hospital." Directly above her name on the census form is nineteen-year-old Michigan-born Margaret Weible, with the same occupation. I have not established the identity of Margaret as of yet, but I believe she was likely a first cousin of Charles Edwin's, and the most likely avenue by which Frances met her second husband.

The burial listing for Charles Edwin denotes him "Rev. Fr. Charles Edwin Weible," though I have not found confirmation of his title nor information regarding his church affiliation or ordination.
