Narrative
Note: The marital history of Emmett Dean Stults
The picture I have of Emmett's family history is somewhat fragmented, owing to my unsuccessful attempts at records searches for him, his spouses, and to some degree his children. I have not located any marriage or divorce records for Emmett, and I have not found birth or death records for any of his spouses.
He appears to have married Lillian M. Wilkinson (b. about 1876 in Illinois) between 1894 and 1895, presumably in Kansas, and the first of their eight children was born in August of 1895. The family remained in Kansas for many years, but between 1911 and 1920 Emmett and his family had relocated to Colorado, where he and his wife and all but one of his children were counted in the 1920 US Census in La Junta, Otero Cty, Colorado. (His eldest son, Harlie, had married and become a father himself by 1920, and was living nearby in La Junta.)
Not long after this it appears that Emmett and Lillian divorced, because in the 1930 US Census the four youngest children (Amos, Harriette, Evelyn, and William) are found in Florence, Fremont Cty, Colorado living with their mother and her second husband, Lee Noah Gaudy. Also living with them are Amos' wife Edith Maude (Antrobus) Stults and their daughter, Colorado-born Jeannine Marie Stults, along with the Utah-born six-year-old Lillian Arvilla Gaudy, apparently the daughter of Lillian and Lee. This suggests that the elder Lillian and Emmett divorced prior to the younger Lillian's birth in 1924.
It's here that I'll note a large discrepancy in the ages reported for Lillian between the US Census records from her years married to Emmett (1900 through 1920) and the one found for her with Lee in 1930 (with no record found so far for either Lee or Lillian in 1940). In the first three records, her age was reported as twenty-five, thirty-four, and forty-three, all of which line up for her presumed birth year of 1876. In 1930, she was reported as forty-two, when in actuality she was nearly fifty-four. This would have made her around forty-seven or forty-eight at the birth of daughter Lillian Arvilla, and this casts some doubt as to whether Lillian Wilkinson was her biological mother. In a California marriage record from 1946, though, Lillian Arvilla (bearing the surname Garrabrant) clearly names her parents Lee Noah Gaudy and Lillian M. Wilkinson, and her birth year as 1924, so it's entirely possible. I have no information on any previous marriage of Lee's, though in the 1930 US Census he indicated he was twenty-two at the time of his first marriage.
I have not located a 1930 US Census listing for Emmett, and he doesn't appear in the listings I've found so far for any of his children in that same year, but in 1940 he's listed as married and resident in Pueblo, Pueblo Cty, Colorado. With him are a Colorado-born wife, Lola M. Stults, age fifty-one, a thirty-two-year-old male lodger (Ben Smith) from Kansas, and thirty-seven-year-old Elsie Patton from Kansas, listed as a daughter of the household. I had originally speculated that this might have been Emmett's daughter Evelyn E. Stults, but the listing clearly gives her age as thirty-seven, which would be about six years too old to be Evelyn. It's possible that Elsie is a daughter of Lola's, but assuming the ages are reported correctly, that would mean Lola would have been about fourteen at Elsie's birth, which is possible but not terribly likely. At this point, I can't clearly identify whose daughter she might be, and I also cannot more clearly identify Lola, as I have not found any previous maiden or married name for her, nor any marriage record for her and Emmett, nor any divorce or death record for her.
The only further record I can find for Emmett is his listing on FindaGrave.com, with the photo of his stone inscribed with his name as "Emmett D. Stults," and giving his vital dates as only the years (1869 - 1948) and the phrase "our dad." The listing includes specific dates without sources, and the birthdate in the listing (23 Feb 1872) clearly conflicts with the year presented in the photo. The listing places his burial in Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, Los Angeles Cty, California - the same cemetery where his son Amos is buried, and where it appears his youngest son William is buried as well. I've not located a specific death record for him to confirm his vital dates at this point.
