Narrative

Note: The family of Bessie Dell (Stults) Karns

Bessie married in early 1893 at the age of twenty to Charles William Karns, and was a widowed mother of three young children (Lola May, Norman Lowell, and Glenn Duane) less than six years later at his death in late 1898. The residencies of these four were somewhat scattered for many years following, making them all difficult to find at times in my searches. Prior to her husband's death, the family had been living in Whitley Cty, Indiana for at least a few years.

- In 1900, Bessie herself was a servant in the David Spohnhauer household in Cleveland Twp, Whitley Cty, while Lola was living with her maternal grandparents, David and Harriet (Minnich) Stults in Clear Creek Twp, Huntington Cty, Indiana. Norman was living near to Bessie in Cleveland Twp, listed as a "cousin" in the Richard Fandree household (whose exact relationship to Norman I haven't yet established). I have not yet found Glenn's residence in 1900 as of yet, though I suspect he was also fostered with extended family.

- By 1910, Bessie had joined her daughter Lola at Bessie's parents' home in Clear Creek Twp, while Glenn was a "hired boy" in the household of John Bone in Warren, Huntington Cty. Norman's residence in 1910 is not found in my records searches so far.

- Lola had married in 1913, and by 1920 was living with her husband Earl Goble (and their son Philip) in Huntington, Huntington Cty. Bessie was living nearby in the city with her sons Norman and Glenn, both bachelors in their twenties, in 1920. Norman would marry later that same year, while Glenn wouldn't marry until 1923.

- With all three of her children married and living in Huntington, (and five of her six known grandchildren already born), Bessie was rooming in the household of Mary Montz elsewhere in the same city in 1930.

- Norman had died in 1936, and by 1940 his widow (Mary) and youngest daughter (Carolyn) had moved to South Whitley, Whitley Cty, Indiana, while his oldest daughter (Marjorie) was lodging in the William Long household in Huntington. Glenn had moved his wife and three children (including Bessie's sixth grandchild) to Fort Wayne, Allen Cty, Indiana, while Lola had divorced in 1935 and was head of a household in Huntington that included her mother Bessie, her only son Philip, and her daughter-in-law Grace.

Bessie died in 1947, and her daughter Lola remarried late that same year; I suspect she didn't remarry until some time after her mother had passed away, and at some point in the years afterward retired with her second husband to Manatee Cty, Florida, where the two of them passed away many years later. I don't have information on whether Norman's widow Mary ever remarried, but she appears to be buried with Norman with their shared stone after surviving him by nearly fifty-five years. Glenn died just months after his sister, and his buried with his wife (Cleo) who survived him by about eleven years.

While I don't have information on any potential great-grandchildren of Bessie's born to either Lola's or Glenn's families, Norman's two daughters provided Bessie with what appears to be nine great-grandchildren.
