Note: The conflicting birthdates of William Emmett Stults

I've not found a birth record for William as of yet, though I am certain I have the correct death records identified - between the middle name he bears (for his father) and his age, the multiple death records all settle on a death date of 4 Dec 1989 in San Bernadino Cty, California. The reported birthdates or ages I have from several sources follow.

- His California Death Index record gives his birthdate as 25 Jan 1910.
- His US Social Security Death Index record gives his birthdate as 26 Nov 1910.
- His marriage record for 12 Nov 1932 to Dorothy M. Kaufman gives his age as twenty-two.
- His marriage record for 31 Dec 1937 to Helen Marion French gives his age as twenty-seven.
- His marriage record for 24 Dec 1962 to Edna V. Sargent gives his age as fifty-two.
- In the 1920 US Census (recorded 19 Jan 1920) his age is reported as eight.
- In the 1930 US Census (recorded 4 Apr 1930) his age is reported as nineteen.
- In the 1940 US Census (recorded 4 May 1940) his age is reported as twenty-nine.

My interpretation of the above is to say that his birth year was almost certainly 1910, and that his birthday fell after the 19th of January but before the 4th of April. As such, I think the date reported in the US SSDI record is mistaken, probably due to a transcription error somewhere, and that his birthdate was 25 Jan 1910.

Narrative

Note: The marital history of William Emmett Stults

William appears to have married at least three times; the earliest I can find is to Dorothy M. Kaufman on 12 Nov 1932 in Orange Cty, California. I have not found either a divorce record for the two of them or a later marriage record for Dorothy, nor have I found a death record for her - so I don't know how this first marriage ended.

The next marriage record I can find for William is to Helen Marion French on 31 Dec 1937 in Los Angeles Cty, California. Oddly enough, in the 1940 US Census William (listed as "married") appears to be living in Pinal Cty, Arizona with Helen's mother, step-father, and brothers, but without Helen. Whether she was living elsewhere in 1940 or whether the census taker simply missed noting her presence in that household is unknown. It should be noted that Helen remarried in San Deigo Cty, California on 16 Feb 1963 to Richard W. Rudd, so it seems safe to assume that her marriage to William ended in divorce.

William married again in Alameda Cty, California on 24 Dec 1962 to Edna V. Sargent. While William was in his early fifties at this point, Edna was only in her mid-thirties. I have not found further records to indicate whether Edna and William remained married, nor have I found anything to suggest that William had children from any marriage.
