Narrative

Note: The marriages and children of Clifford Jerome French

Clifford married twice that I have been able to determine - first on 13 Aug 1938 in East Wenatchee, Douglas Cty, Washington, to Yvonne Margaret "Peggy" van Slate (b. 25 Jan 1921, d. 4 Sep 1995), daughter of Eldwin Ambrose and Pearl Alma (Andre) van Slate. The two of them were counted together in the 1940 US Census, and divorced at some point after. Peggy remarried to Frederick St. Claire Franklin on 28 Dec 1948.

I have been unable to determine when his second marriage took place, but his second wife's married name appears to be Helen Caroline French (b. 27 Aug 1928, d. 16 Apr 1982). Her headstone is engraved with the words "Wife - Mother - Grandmother." I have not found any information about Helen's birthplace or parents.

Peggy's obituary indicates she was survived by one son (Fred S. Franklin Jr. of Omak, Okanogan Cty, Washington) and one daughter (Anne Burgess of Bothell, King Cty, Washington), and that she was preceded in death by one son in 1965 and a daughter in 1953. The predeceased son was Lawrence Andre French Franklin (b. 6 Oct 1942, d. 10 Oct 1965), who was killed in action in the Vietnam War; Lawrence appears to have been born to Clifford and Peggy, but all indications are that he was adopted by Fred after his mother remarried. (Despite his death at a young age, Lawrence left a wife and three children at his death.) The predeceased daughter appears to have been Bonna Dea Franklin, who died an infant in 1953 and thus would have been a child of Peggy's second marriage.

Of the two surviving children mentioned in Peggy's obituary, it seems clear that Fred Jr. would not be a son of Clifford's, but rather of Fred's. Peggy's daughter Anne has been harder to trace, but I have found indications of a woman named Yvonne Anne in the King Cty area of Washington who would have been born about 1940, and may well be the eldest of Clifford and Peggy's children.

I have not found information on any children that may have been born to Clifford and Helen, though her headstone engraving and the age gap between Helen and Clifford suggests a likelihood that there may have been further children of Clifford's. At this time, I have not found confirmation of any such children.
