[Obituary for Dewey M. Shady, from the Decatur Daily Democrat, 10 Apr 1979; posted online to the FindaGrave.com website.]

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in C. M. Sloan & Sons Funeral Home, Fort Wayne, for Dewey M. Shady, 80, of Route 1, Craigville, who died at 3:05 p.m. Sunday in a Fort Wayne nursing home.

Mr. Shady, a native of Adams County, retired in 1950 from the Elkhart Rubber Works.

Surviving is a sister, Edith Carder, Fort Wayne.

Friends may call from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Shady Cemetery, Adams County.

 

Narrative

Note: Dewey Martin Shady

At a first glance, I had believed Dewey had never married, and had no children; in the 1900 and 1910 US Census records, he was listed as living with his parents, and in the 1920 US Census he was counted living with the family of his older half-brother, Arta Shady. In 1930, he was counted as a single male lodger household of Shirley Lovada in Elkhart, Elkhart Cty, Indiana, and by 1940 he was counted as living with his father, his father's third wife, and his younger relative Robert Shady. Dewey is buried in Shady Cemetery in Magley, Adams Cty, Indiana, with a headstone shared with his father, and his obituary from the Decatur Daily Democrat mentions only a surviving sister (Edith).

The listing for Dewey on the FindaGrave.com website, though, lists a spouse (Elva Graham) and child (Gene Shady), and some supplemental information that summarized their family history. I had some difficulty validating this information at first, as the listing for Elva (along with the photo of her headstone) gave her birth year as 1920, despite her included (unsourced) obituary giving her age at death (in 1995) as eighty-five. The census records for her parents' household, from 1920 through 1940, all give a birth year of approximately 1909-1910.

Further research found that, sometime after 1930, Dewey left Indiana and found himself in Virginia, where he married Elva (b. about 1909) on Christmas eve in 1936 in Floyd Cty, Virginia. Their son, Gene, died at birth on 24 Jun 1939, and the supplemental information on FindaGrave indicates that Dewey left Elva seven days later, presumably to return to his family in Indiana. (On closer inspection, the 1940 US Census listings for their parents' households, seem to confirm this - Dewey's status was given as married, and Elva, using her maiden name, was also listed as married.) The supplemental information on FindaGrave states that the two were divorced on 15 Oct 1942 in Floyd Cty, Virginia, on the grounds of Dewey's desertion.

Sometime after 1942, Elva remarried to a man with the surname Black, though I have not found any marriage record, nor any information about this man's name or identity. When she remarried again in 1964 to Robert Carl Jones (b. 1923) in Radford (independent), Virginia, Elva was named "Elva Graham Black" and gave her age as forty-six, instead of her actual age of about fifty-four or fifty-five.

Dewey's obituary makes no mention of Elva or their son, nor does Elva's mention Dewey at all.
