Narrative
[Obituary for Dorothy Nagel, from the Loyal Tribune, 4 Mar 1915; posted online to the wiclarkcountyhistory.org website.]
Mrs. John Nagel died at the home of her son William, in the town of Unity, Clark County, Wis. last Friday, Feb. 26, 1915, after and [sic] illness of several years, death being due to old age.
Deceased was born Jan. 10, 1835 in Dambeck, Mecklenburg, Germany. In 1864 she was married to John Nagel and in 1882 they came to America and at first lived in Dodge County. About 15 years ago the family moved to our vicinity, where they have since resided. She was the mother of six children, of which two passed to the great beyond before her. At the time of her death she was 80 years, 1 month and 15 days old. She leaves to mourn her death her husband, two sons, Ernest Nagel of Hustiford, Wis., and Wm. Nagel of the town of Unity, and two daughters, Mrs. August Pieper of the town of Beaver and Mrs. Reinhard of the town of Beaver, besides a host of relatives and friends.
After a long busy and useful life she died as she had lived, honored, trusted and loved. She reared her own monument while she lived in the hearts of all who knew her. Her life was complete if work all done and well done constitutes completion. She will always be remembered as a kind wife and loving mother.
The funeral was held Monday afternoon from the Lutheran Church and her remains laid to rest in the Lutheran Cemetery, Rev. Kemena officiating.
Narrative
Note: A potential previous marriage for Dorothea Nehls
Dorothy may well have been married prior to her wedding to Johann "John" Nagel; her obituary names one more child than does John's, a married adult daughter by the name of Anna. Anna was counted in the 1867 census in Mecklenburg as part of the household, and listed with the surname Nagel, but was several years older than the next oldest sibling (Ernst) and had a listed birth year that was seven years earlier than John and Dorothy's wedding date.
It is also worth noting that Dorothy was nearly thirty by the time she and John married, a relatively late age for a first marriage in that time period but relatively common one for a young widow's second marriage.
I have not found any confirmed records of any previous marriage for Dorothy, nor a name (or surname) for any likely first husband of hers. Likewise, I have not yet found a birth record for Anna that would provide any information in this regard.
Narrative
See the notes for her husband, Johann Carl Christoph "John" Nagel.
