Note: The family residence situation of August and Augusta (Timm) Schnitzke

It is interesting to note that, at least as early as 1920 and possibly earlier, August and Augusta lived apart in the same city (Waukesha, Waukesha Cty, Wisconsin) according to the census records found so far, though the reasons are not clear at this time. In the 1920 US Census, Augusta can be found living with one of her middle children (Charles) and one of her youngest children (Viola). In the 1930 US Census, mother Augusta is living in the same city with adult children John, Charles, and (now-widowed) Agnes, while father August is found several sheets away as a lodger in the household of Frank and Anna Pool. In the 1940 US Census, August is still living with the now-widowed Anna Pool, still in Waukesha.

Whether the family separated for reasons that had to do with working and livelihood, or for personal reasons, is not known at this time. It is interesting to note that, in the records found so far, both August and Augusta continued to report their marital status as "married." It is possible they separated and simply chose not to divorce for any number of personal reasons.

[headline] Services Tuesday for Mrs. Augusta Schmitzke

Funeral services will be held Tuesday for Mrs. Augusta Timm Schmitzke [sic], 81, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H.N. Jewett, Delafield, Saturday evening. She was born in Germany and came to Waukesha when she was a young girl. In 1885 she married Augusta [sic] Schmitzke. She was a member of the Evangelical Reformed Church here.

Surviving her are four daughters, Mrs. Jewett, Mrs. Viola Diedrich, Waukesha, Mrs. Harriet Kranich and Mrs. Anna Mosley, Milwaukee, four sons, John and William of Waukesha, August of Milwaukee and Charles of Marinette, 25 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Lyle funeral home Tuesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. H.G. Settlage officiating. Burial will be at Prairie Home Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Monday.
