Narrative

Note: The marital and family history of Martha J. Eley

Martha, the youngest child of Martin Eley and his second wife, Caroline Alexander, appears to have married twice. Her first marriage was in late 1902 to Alva Albert Mahoney, a man in his twenties (married to Ora Mahoney in 1896) with two young boys (Harry and Forest). Whether Alva's first marriage ended in his wife's death or a divorce is not clear at this time. Alva and Martha remained married until his death in 1944, and appear to have had no children together.

Martha's second marriage was in 1947, to another widower - John Henry Thomas, whose wife (Laura Imel) had died in 1941. John had several grown children from his first marriage, though obviously he and Martha had none during their marriage, which ended at John's death in 1961. Martha followed in 1962, and was buried with her first husband, Alva, in Center Cemetery in Portland, Jay Cty, Indiana. With no known surviving children of her own, Martha's line did not continue after her death.
