Narrative

Note: Researching Emma Weible

Owing mostly to the very large gap I can find in the records for Emma, I have been able to discover very little about her adult life and family; after the 1860 US Census listing for her parents' household, the next record I can find for her is an indexed marriage record for Emma to Frank Bishop in Defiance Cty, Ohio on 18 Mar 1879, with no supplemental information of any kind in the index. This is the only record I have found for her husband Frank, and I have no information on his vital dates or burial.

After that marriage record, the next records I can find for Emma start forty years later, and are the 1920, 1930, and 1940 US Census listings for her household in Lima, Allen Cty, Ohio. In the first she was counted with her adult daughter Vinna (or similar) and her father Joseph Weible, while in the following two she was counted only with Vinna. In all three, Emma's marital status is given as "widowed," suggesting that Frank had died prior to 1920. Emma gives her occupation in the first two listings as "dressmaker."

Interestingly, Vinna's occupation is listed as "none" or is left blank on all three census records, and she appears to be unmarried until at least the 1940 US Census, when she would have been in her early sixties. I have not found a confirmed birthdate for her, and I have found no death date or burial information for either her or her mother. I have wondered whether Vinna was disabled in some way, leading her to live with her mother and be without a job well into later life, but this is only speculation on my part.

Because of the very large gap in the records, I have not determined whether Emma had other surviving children. I suspect not, as I would tend to think other surviving children from her marriage would have made sure to see to her burial, would have been married and named her as the mother of the bride or groom in their marriage records, etc. Thus far, I have not found indication that she had other children.
