Narrative

Note: The daughters of Nina Hayes and John Zierath

Before becoming a young widow just a few weeks before her forty-seventh birthday, Nina bore three daughters in her marriage to John: Mary, Alice, and Jacqueline. I have had some difficulty finding records and further family information for the three girls, with the following summary covering my findings so far.

- Mary, the eldest, married in August 1929, just four months before her father's death, to Charles William Swartz. The two of them are counted in Fort Wayne, Allen Cty, Indiana in the 1930 US Census. The next record I can find for either of them is a burial listing for Charles on the FindaGrave.com website, displaying a photo with a death date of 1936. (The burial is listed in Maumee Cemetery in Antwerp, Paulding Cty, Ohio - Charles' birthplace and the same cemetery in which is parents are buried.) I have not found any further records for Mary, so I do not know where she was living in 1940, nor whether she remarried. I also have no information so far on whether she had any children by Charles or any other potential husband, nor do I have a death date for her.

- Alice, the second oldest, was the first to marry by several years. Her first husband, Clement Evard, she married in June 1925, but by the time of the 1930 US Census they had divorced and Alice was counted as living in her mother's household in Fort Wayne, while Clement had remarried and was living with his second wife. Several years later, Alice remarried to Maurice Perkins in March 1937, and the two of them were counted together in the 1940 US Census, also in Fort Wayne. This is the last confirmed record I have found for either of them, aside from a public records search which places one or both of them at addresses in Vero Beach, Indian River Cty, Florida in the mid-1990s. I have found no death date or burial record for either of them, nor any indication on whether they had children despite marrying when Alice was not yet thirty.

- Youngest daughter Jacqueline was born when her older sisters were already adults and when her mother Nina was forty-three; she was not yet four years old when her father died. A few weeks after her eighteenth birthday, she married Charles Virgil Smead, and the two of them appear to have had four sons. I have not found a death record for Jacqueline, though it appears she and her husband were living in California prior to his death in 1997. I do not have burial information for Charles, nor do I have a death date or burial location for Jacqueline, though the obituary for her son Charles Jr. in 2006 gives her as preceding him in death. Of her four son, I have complete name and birthdate information for only two of them.

Narrative

I have not found a burial location for Nina, and the only information I have on her date of death is from her US Social Security Death Index record. This record gives her married name, suggesting to me that she did not remarry, though I cannot confirm this - she survived her husband by thirty-four years, so there was plenty of time to remarry in that time. She may have even chosen to keep her first married name, though that seems unlikely to me.

Her husband John is buried in Prairie Grove Cemetery in Fort Wayne, Allen Cty, Indiana. It would seem likely that she might have been buried there, as well. It is also possible that she is buried elsewhere, depending upon where her daughters were living at the time of her death in 1963.
