Narrative

Note: Malinda Henry's origins and names

In trying to ascertain the identity of John C. Miller's wife Malinda, the first record I found that gave a potential surname for her was the marriage record of her daughter Harriet Miller in 1883; this record named her Malinda Forst, which suggested to me that this was yet another instance of these two families intermarrying. I wasn't sure to which branch of the Forst family she belonged, as her age tended to have her fall between the known generations of Forsts that I'd found and established thus far.

Further marriage records for her children named her Malinda Henry, and a search for records under that name turned up one I'd found in previous searches - the 1850 US Census record for the household of David Forst, in which was resident a nine-year-old Ohio-born Malinda Henry. My suspicion at this point was that she was an orphan whose family had been known to the Forsts, and she came to stay with David and his family sometime after the death of one or both of her parents. Being raised in their household may have led her to be called by their surname at times, leading to some confusion as reflected in the multiple surnames in the records.

In 1856, at about the age of fifteen, she married John C. Miller, a dozen years her senior, and would give him several children before her death at the age of thirty-six. The majority of marriage records for her children name her Malinda Henry; I've not found other records (beyond the one mentioned above) that give her the Forst surname.

Her name is occasionally spelled "Melinda," though "Malinda" is the most frequently-occuring I've seen. Additionally, her own marriage record spells her surname "Hendry," but nearly every other instance I've seen reports it as "Henry."
