Narrative

Note: Researching Florence Grace Hatfield

Aside from the apparent commonality of the name "Florence Hatfield," particularly in Ohio in the early twentieth century, there have been some other minor difficulties in researching Florence's history. After the US Census records for her parents' household in 1910 and 1920, the next record I've found for her is her marriage to William Ernest Wittred in 1926. By the 1930 US Census, though, she's living as a lodger in a household in Marion, Marion Cty, Ohio, giving her marital status as "widowed." The death record I'd found for William Ernest, though, was dated 1947, and had his parents' names on it to confirm it was for him. Looking back, he's found living in 1930 with his parents and younger brother in Marion, Marion Cty, Ohio, listed as "single" and named as "Ernest." He's also named as the spouse on the 1946 death record for a Geraldine Siegler Wittred, called Ernest Wittred.

It would appear, then, that shortly after their marriage in 1926, Florence and William Ernest must have divorced, with Florence re-taking her maiden name. I've found no further records for her after the 1930 US Census, though I would guess that the burial in Frame Cemetery in Meeker, Marion Cty, Ohio is certainly hers - the birthdate agrees, and the burial gives her deathdate as 1994 and names her Florence G. Hatfield. This would suggest she never re-married, and it would seem likely that she had no children.
