Narrative

Note: The names and spellings of Gayle Hatfield

The birth register (as noted and viewed for the Ohio County Births index) gives her name as "Hatfield, Francis Gail." In most other instances, "Frances" is spelled in the more traditional sense. Gayle is spelled in a variety of manners in the records - including "Gail" and "Gale." The order of names seems to change as presented, with most of the earlier records giving her name as Frances Gayle, while later records report it as Gayle Frances - except for her US Social Security Death Index record, which reports her name as "Francis Kinzler."

On her gravestone, her married name is given as Gayle F. Kinsler.

Narrative

Note: The break-up of Gayle and Clifford's family

Like some other unfortunate families, Gayle Hatfield and Clifford Kinsler did not manage to avoid divorce; sometime between 1920 (when the US Census has them married and living in Big Island Twp, Marion Cty, Ohio with their first two children) and 1930 (when the US Census notes Gayle divorced and on her own in Marion, Marion Cty, Ohio), they had their last children and divorced. What I find somewhat unusual is that neither of them appear to have any of their children living with them after the split. The fragmenting and spread of the family has made records searches somewhat more difficult, but here is what I have so far.

Their youngest, Avis, appears to have been born around 1926, so I suspect that Gayle and Clifford's divorce happened in the latter half of the twenties. By the time of the 1930 US Census, Avis was listed in the household of her maternal grandparents, the Hatfields, while middle siblings Floyd and Margaret were living with their paternal grandparents, the Kinslers. I don't know why the siblings were split up, although Avis may well have been young enough that separating her from her older brother and sister was not considered to be as significant an issue - she wouldn't be able to remember the time and events, and wouldn't be as close to them simply for being so young.

The oldest sibling, Bernard, has not yet been located for certain after the 1920 US Census listing for his parents' household, but there is a 1940 US Census listing naming a Bernard Kinsler as an unmarried employee in the Herman household in Cincinnati, Hamilton Cty, Ohio. As he would have been in his teens at the time of his parents' divorce, he may well have struck out on his own at that point.

I have no information as to the circumstances or family dynamic that led to the siblings being so scattered, and none apparently in the care of their parents; there are certainly many possibilities, but it seems likely that the real story is not one that will be available for discovery.
