Narrative

Note: Researching Paul Hite Miller and family

My initial data for Paul came from his entry in the text Christian Metzger: Founder of an American Family 1682-1942, where he is noted as marrying twice and having three children. From there, I have been able to find at least some information to help complete his family history, though not as much as I would like to be able to present.

In the text, Paul's first wife is noted as "Ruth Hentz, dau. of Henry and Elizabeth Hentz of Seattle, Wash." On the birth and death records for their son Duane, and on the birth record for their son Truett, her maiden name is given as "Lentz." I have not yet been able to positively identify her parents, though I have found a pair that may be them - in the 1900 US Census in Seattle, King Cty, Washington is the household of California-born Henry Lentz (of Prussian descent) and Russian-born wife Lizzie. (Less than a year prior, there is a marriage record in August 1899 for a Henry A. Lentz and Lizzie Bollinger, though whether this is the same pair is uncertain.) I will note that the only time I can find Ruth connected to Paul's family in the records is in the 1920 US Census listing for his household, where the two of them are listed without children but certainly only several weeks away from the birth of their son Duane.

I do not know how Paul's first marriage ended, though the text notes he had remarried by 1926 and he is found in the 1930 US Census record with his second wife Edna and her mother Mary E. Ellis. Their son James Ronald was born in 1931, and the three of them (and Edna's mother Mary) were counted again in the 1940 US Census.

I have not found Paul's first wife in any census records after 1920, nor have I found a death date or burial location for her. I have also not found any confirmed records of his first two sons, Duane and Truett, in the 1930 or 1940 US Census records. I would expect that Paul and Ruth divorced, or the text would likely have noted Ruth's death date, though I have not found any records to confirm this. Of the two sons, I have only found a death date and burial location for Duane, and I have not found any record of marriage for either of them.

Paul's youngest son, James Ronald, is buried in the same cemetery as his parents, and on his stone is his wife's name ("Nancy L.") and vital dates, though I have not found a marriage record for the two of them. I have also not found any information on children for any of Paul's three sons.
