Narrative

Note: Researching Louis Edward Vincent

In the course of trying to find records for Louis, the two most unifying connections are his stated profession and records tying him to his nephew, Albert Ernest Vincent. The following summary will review the findings I have so far.

The earliest record I have found for Louis is a marriage record from Meadville, Crawford Cty, Pennsylvania, in late 1893; this record gives his birthdate as 28 Apr, and his age as twenty-one, which, while the correct date and month, overstates his presumed age by two years. This marriage was to the sixteen-year-old Winnie B. Cole, daughter of George Cole of Meadville. This marriage does not seem to have lasted long, as by the 1900 US Census Louis was counted in a household in Fort Wayne, Allen Cty, Indiana, reported as a single man. (Whether Winnie had died or the pair had divorced is unknown to me at this time, as I have not found any further record of Winnie.) Interestingly, though it is difficult to tell if the two were counted as part of the same household, Louis appears to be listed next to Myron Dessauer, one of the two founders of the well-known Fort Wayne department store Wolf & Dessauer. Myron reported his occupation as "dry goods," while Louis reported his as "butcher" and the two boarders listed just below Louis were reported as a baker and a confectioner.

In the 1910 US Census, Louis was counted in Chicago, Cook Cty, Illinois, again reporting himself as a butcher who owned his own shop, but this time married with a Pennsylvania-born wife Louise (aged thirty-two, three years younger than Louis) reporting a thirteen-year-old Pennsylvania-born son Albert. I have not found any marriage record that named a spouse Louise, so I cannot say anything with any certainty as to Louise's identity. Albert, though, I believe is actually Louis' nephew, son of Ernest Starr Vincent, who lived with or near Louis and worked with him for many years. The notes on Albert detail some of the other confluences, such as the reported home and work addresses of the two men on their WWI draft registration cards.

In late summer of 1916, Louis married Norwegian immigrant Augusta E. Larsen in Chicago, and the two of them were counted together in Chicago in both the 1920 and 1930 US Censuses - first alone, and in the later listing with a Canadian-born fourteen-year-old girl named Ellen, reported as their daughter. (I suspect this was a fostered or adopted girl, but cannot confirm at this time; she was absent from the 1920 listing, when she would have been four years of age.) In both of these censuses, Louis reported his occupation as a butcher or working in a retail meat market.

By the time of the 1940 US Census, Louis had moved to Miami, Dade Cty, Florida, where he still reported himself as a butcher but appeared alone in his household, noting himself a widower. I suspect this is not correct, as there is a listing for Augusta Vincent in Chicago, reporting herself as married, Norwegian-born, and living with her brother, a niece, a nephew, and a young girl reported as her daughter. This suggests to me that Louis and Augusta divorced instead.

The FindaGrave.com website seems to indicate that Louis is buried in Cochranton Cemetery in Cochranton, Crawford Cty, Pennsylvania, though the listing does not include a photo of the gravesite. Additionally, the listing also appears to list Louis as the "wife" of Albert E. Vincent in the supplemental information, though I suspect this is a mistake on the part of the submitter who assumed the two sharing a gravesite and stone were a married couple. I think it is more likely that Louis is buried next to his nephew and frequent employee.

I have not found any information that Louis married again later in life, nor have I found any information to suggest that Louis had any biological children.
