Narrative

Note: John Thompson

John's marriage record to Tild Lamere (Ottilie Lemieux) reports him as 24 years old; it also spells his last name as "Thomson."

I've found little other information on John outside of his birth record (reporting his parents as John Thompson and Marie Charity) and his residence in the 1880 US Census listing for his home in Easton, Marathon Cty, Wisconsin. I do not yet know if his marriage to Ottilie Lemieux ended in divorce or in his death, nor do I have a death date or burial location for him. I've not found any information on his parents yet, though some circumstantial information (the population and surname distribution around them) suggests that the elder John Thompson may have been Norwegian-born or at least of Norwegian descent.

Other than his son "Ernie," I'm not currently aware of any other children born to John and Ottilie.

ADDENDUM: A public Ancestry.com search has turned up a bit more information; a public tree (owner "deaconjmf") gives his date of death as 1892 in Easton, Marathon Cty, Wisconsin, but does not provide a source. It also gives his parents as John Thompson (b. 1830) and Marie Cartiz (b. 1834 in Canada), but provides no other information for them. That same tree also lists only Ernst as a child of the younger John Thompson and Tillie LaMere.

A different tree (owner "Groversar") names only a John Jack Thompson, b. 11 Jun 1882 in Wausau, Marathon Cty, Wisconsin, d. 14 May 1946 in Minneapolis, Hennepin Cty, Minnesota, as a child of John L. and Tillie, and continues his descendancy further. It may well be that Ernie had a younger brother.

The 1880 US Census record has John naming his father's birthplace as Canada, and his mother's as Wisconsin. John gives his race as "half-breed," as does his wife Tillie, who also gives her father's birthplace as Canada and her mother's as Wisconsin. Their son, Ernest, is also listed as "half-breed."

SECOND ADDENDUM: Bruce Helmer has shared some information on searches he's been doing on his family history from the same region of Wisconsin, and some of the documents he's found indicate a definite possibility that John was alive well past 1880. Martin Holbrook, one of Bruce's ancestors, lived with his parents near Wausau, Marathon Cty, Wisconsin in 1880, and in a statement dated 1913 a John Thompson (who identifies himself as a member of the "Lac du Flambeau band of Indians") gives testament to Martin's heritage from the same tribe. In another document Bruce uncovered, there is a Bureau of Indian Affairs survey for the Lac du Flambeau tribes where there are listed (in the 1920-1922 window) both a 72-year-old John Thompson Sr. and a 42-year-old John Thompson Jr. The elder of these two men would be nearly the right age to be the father of Ernest Thompson, and the younger would be about the right age for the presumed younger brother John (mentioned above). It is also possible, though, that this is simply coincidence and the Lac du Flambeau tribe had more than one John Thompson born at about the same time.
