Narrative

[Obituary for John F. Stuver, paper and date unknown but presumed to be a Huntington publication; clipping from the files of Jane Anne Thomas.]

[headline] Retired Painter Dies at Greensburg Home

John F. Stuver, 90, retired painter and paper hanger and former resident of this city, died at 8 p.m. Monday in the IOOF Home at Greensburg where he had been a resident the last two years.

Mr. Stuver was a native of Bippus having been born October 8, 1871, to Jacob and Mary Duncan Stuver. He is the last of his family.

Friends may call after 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Briggs-Merckx Funeral home where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in the Lancaster Cemetery.

Narrative

There is a marriage record for John in 1908, to Myrtle Hicks, in Whitley Cty, Indiana; in the very next US Census record, he appears as a boarder in a household in Fort Wayne, Allen Cty, Indiana, without his wife but listed as married. The next record I find for him is the 1930 US Census, which puts him living alone in Huntington, Huntington Cty, Indiana, listed as single - followed by the 1940 US Census record, which still puts him in Huntington and living alone, but this time listed as divorced.

Narrative

In the 1880 US Census listing for the household of his grandparents, John Jacob Stuver Sr. and Anna May (Dorn) Stuver, there is an eight-year-old Indiana-born John Stuver listed as a son. I find it most likely that this record is most likely for their grandson, John F. "Little John" Stuver, whose mother died when he was an infant, and whose father remarried and was living elsewhere with this second wife in 1880.
