Narrative

Note: the family and marital history of Claude F. Knecht

Claude appears to have married twice - first in Whitley Cty in 1920 to Edythe Marie Johnson, daughter of William and Sarah (Meinika or Mineka) Johnson of Whitley Cty, Indiana. This marriage appears to have ended in divorce in 1925, according to the record for Claude's second marriage in DeKalb Cty, Indiana in 1936 to a divorcée named Virginia A. Hughes.

On their marriage record, Virginia appears to give her birthplace as Illinois (written as "Ill."), though the handwriting is difficult to decipher. She was born Apolonia Krajëwski, daughter of Paul and Wanda Krajëwski, and immigrated to America with her family in 1909, settling with her family in the area of Toledo, Lucas Cty, Ohio by the time she was twelve years of age. At her marriage in 1936 to Claude, she stated that she was married once before, and divorced in 1930.

I was unsure as to whether Claude had any children from either marriage, as initially I could find no record of either Claude or Edythe in the 1930 US Census. The obituary for his second wife, Virginia, names her the widow of Claude Knecht and mentions no children surviving her or preceding her in death.

My next find was an obituary for Marian Anita (Knecht) Marciniak in 1998, naming her the daughter of Claude and Edith (Johnson) Knecht. Searches for records pertaining to her turned up census listings from 1930 and 1940, living with her mother and a different step-father in each year; her mother's complicated marital history (four marriages between 1920 and 1945) had made finding her more difficult. Those listings also led to the discovery of her older brother, Ralph J. Knecht.

I have not yet determined if Ralph had children; the last record I can find for him prior to his death is his Army enlistment in Toledo in late 1942. He did marry, and is buried with his wife Betty. Some online searches have suggested to me that they had six children, but I have not established their names and identities as of yet.

Marian (who may have been called by her middle name, Anita) appears to have married twice, and four surviving children (a son and two daughters from her first marriage, and a son from her second marriage )are named in her obituary in 1998. Listings on the FindaGrave.com website indicate she also had daughter from her first marriage who died as a teenager in 1960.

Claude died in 1957, followed by his wife Virginia in 1975. Edythe's fourth husband, Homer Grice, died in 1977, and Edythe herself died in 1985. Ralph and Marian passed away in 1993 and 1998, respectively, and one of Marian's surviving sons, William, died in 1999.
