Narrative

Note: the marital history of Edythe Marie Johnson

Edythe appears to have married at least four times in her life, though my records searches are not entirely complete in this regard. Her first marriage was to Claude F. Knecht in 1920, with whom she had two children (Ralph J., b. 1921, and Marian Anita, b. 1923). They appear to have divorced in 1925 (according to the record from Claude's remarriage in 1936).

I have not yet found a record for Edythe's second marriage, but by the time of the 1930 US Census she and her two children appear to be living with her second husband, John E. Kramer, along with a two-year-old daughter also named Edith in Columbia City, Whitley Cty, Indiana. (It should be pointed out that there is a 1920 marriage record for John E. Kramer and Edith Miner, and a burial listing in Greenhill Cemetery in Columbia city for an Edith Kramer, b. 1899, d. 1928. It is entirely possible that this marriage record applies to the same John, and the two-year-old Edith is his daughter from his first marriage with the burial listing that of his first wife, rather than born to John and Edythe. None of this is confirmed.) I have not found any confirmed burial listing or death date for John, so I do not know if this marriage ended in divorce or in his death.

By the time of the 1940 US Census, Edythe and her teenaged children from her first marriage are found living with what appears to be her third husband, Garland F. Sellers, in Etna Twp, Whitley Cty. I have not found a marriage record for the two of them as of yet, but their marriage seems to have ended in divorce, as well - each of them remarried before Garland's death in 1950.

Next found is the 1945 marriage record for Edythe Marie Sellers and Homer Grice in Jay Cty, Indiana. In this record, Edythe states that she was married and divorced twice before, but gives a divorce date only for the most recent (1 Jun 1944). It appears she and Homer remained married until his death in 1977; they are buried together in Fairview Cemetery in Mishawaka, St. Joseph Cty, Indiana.
