Narrative

Note: Researching Albert Edward Laxton and family

Because of a gap in the records I had initially been able to find for Edward, I was under the impression that he had never married and had no children; the later census records in which he was found placed him some distance from his boyhood home of Monroe Cty, Wisconsin, and listed him as single. It was during searches relevant to the household and family of his younger brother, Frank William Laxton, and Frank's wife Elsie Jane Hoenshel, that I discovered that Edward had married Elsie's older sister Mayme Hoenshel, and had had several children with her, before divorcing after some years.

The specific timeline of Edward and Mayme's marital history is uncertain; Mayme is counted as a nineteen-year-old unmarried daughter in her parents' household in Sparta, Monroe Cty, Wisconsin in the 1910 US Census, while "Ed" was counted as a hired man in the household of Roy Francis just a handful of houses away. This would suggest that the couple married sometime after 1910, but the oldest child attributed to them (Russell L. Laxton) appears to have been born in mid-1909. I have not managed to find Russell in any 1910 US Census records, nor have I found a birth record for him to confirm his birth date.

The next known child (Clarence) was born in 1913, and was followed by three more over the next several years - Ruth in 1916, Fern (an infant death) in 1917, and Willard in 1919. On Edward's WWI draft card, dated 5 Jun 1917 in Sparta, he states that he has a wife and three children. I have not found 1920 US Census listings for any member of the family, but by 1930, Mayme and Edward were counted in separate households - Edward as a single boarder in Grand Haven, Ottawa Cty, Michigan, and Mayme (and her three youngest surviving children) with her mother and brother in Sparta, giving her status as married. By the time of the 1940 US Census, Mayme was reporting her marital status as divorced.

Of the five children Edward and Mayme appear to have had, one daughter (Fern) died as an infant in 1918, and I have not found further record of Ruth after the 1930 US Census, when she was fourteen years old. (I suspect she married, as I have not found a burial record for her with the surname of Laxton.) Russell and Willard both appear to have married and had children; I have not found any information as to whether Clarence married or had children prior to his death at the somewhat young age of forty.

Mayme died in 1945, and was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Sparta. Edward had moved to Cottonwood Cty, Minnesota many years prior, and died there in 1949. He was brought back to Sparta to be buried in Woodlawn, as well. At the time of his death he was survived by at least two of his siblings, at least three of his five children and an undetermined number of grandchildren.
