Narrative
Note: The marital and family history of Earl Marion Forst
Earl was first married to Gladys E. Smith in the first week of 1916; in a few months, the two of them were pregnant with their daughter Garnet, who was born in late November of that same year. The three of them were documented as resident together in the 1920 US Census in Jackson Twp, Huntington Cty, Indiana.
Their marriage lasted a little over eleven years, as Earl and Gladys divorced in June of 1927. Gladys remarried just five months later to the widower Ora Webster Adams, and was counted living with him and his four children in the US Census in both 1930 and 1940, in Huntington, Huntington Cty. Gladys and Ora remained married until his death in 1948. I have not yet found indication that Gladys married a third time, though I suspect not - despite surviving Ora by more than forty years, the two of them are buried together in Pilgrims Rest Cemetery in Huntington, Huntington Cty, Indiana.
About eleven months after his divorce from Gladys, Earl remarried to Catherine (Peck) Schultz, herself divorced in 1926 from her first husband (Harley Peck). Living with the couple in the 1930 US Census were Catherine's daughters from her previous marriage; the older daughter, Anna Mae Peck, continued to live with Earl and Catherine into at least 1940.
It is unknown whether Earl and Catherine remained married after 1940 - Earl died in 1947 at the young age of fifty-three, and is buried singly in Prairie Grove Cemetery in Fort Wayne, Allen Cty, Indiana. Catherine, though, died more than forty years later in California, and is buried under the surname of Forst. It is possible that Catherine is buried separately from Earl for reasons of years and family relocations, though I can also imagine that the two of them may have split or even divorced and Catherine simply never remarried. It is possible that, had they divorced, Earl may have re-married again between 1940 and 1947, but I have found no indication of that, either.
After the 1920 US Census listing her resident with her parents, the next record for Garnet is the 1930 US Census putting her with her maternal grandparents, Oliver and Della Smith, in Jackson Twp after her parents' divorce and subsequent remarriages. Though it appears that neither of her parents had further children in their new marriages, and despite the fact that both of her parents had their step-children living with them for some years, Garnet did not appear to be sharing a home with either of them. The records obviously do not indicate a reason for this arrangement, so it is unknown whether there were troubles between Garnet and either of her parents, issues with her step-siblings, or some other cause for her choice of household. By 1938, Garnet had married to Richard L. Maxton, and would remain with him until his death in 1983, with hers following nearly twenty years later.
As mentioned, Earl does not appear to have had any other children but Garnet, and Garnet apparetly had no half-siblings from her mother's second marriage. Garnet married in 1938, and between 1939 and 1956 had three children - sons Lawrence and Bruce, and middle sister Carol. These three were Earl's only grandchildren.
